With the COVID-19 pandemic at the forefront of our minds lately, it is hard to believe a primary election is on the horizon. Those wishing to run for an office in the Tuesday, August 4, primary election have until Monday, June 1, to file.

Besides the candidates in the headlines, several state, district, county and city candidates are seeking first-time election or reelection.

One candidate for the following local offices will be nominated by each political party in the primary: District Court Judge, District 23,

Districts 1 and 2; District Magistrate Judge, District 23, Position 2; Rooks County Commissioner, Districts 2 and 3; Rooks County Attorney; Rooks County Sheriff; Rooks County Clerk; Rooks County Treasurer; Rooks County Register of Deeds; Township (#1-#12) Trustees and Treasurers; a Precinct Committeeman and Committeewoman in each Precinct; and two positions on the Stockton City Commission.

With the retirement of incumbent Register of Deeds, Rosalee Sprick, that position is up for grabs, as are the two seats expiring on the Rooks County Commission held now by Corky Hagan (District 3), and John Ruder (District 2), and the two expiring on the Stockton City Commission currently held by Don McLaughlin and Sandi Rogers.

To date, locals who have filed for positions on the August 1 primary ballot are as follows: Douglas (Doug) E. Bigge, Stockton, Republican, for District Magistrate Judge, District 23, Position 2; April Brown, Stockton, Republican, for Register of Deeds; Tim J. Berland, Damar, Republican, and Corky Hagan, Plainville, Republican, for Rooks County Commissioner, District 3; Adam R. Bryant, Stockton, for Stockton City Commission; Allen Rempe, Plainville, Republican, for Township 11 Trustee; and Alan D. Dinkel, Plainville, Republican, for Township 11, Treasurer. At the time, Rooks County Clerk Ruthie Muir, and Rooks County Attorney Danielle Muir are compiling signatures to file by petition for their respective offices.

Those desiring to run as a candidate for any of the positions on the primary ballot should contact the office of the Rooks County Clerk before the filing deadline of Monday, June 1 at noon. You may file by petition, or by paying a filing fee.

If you are not registered to vote, or are unsure of your registration status, please contact the county clerk’s office by calling 425-6391. June 1 is also the deadline to change your party affiliation. Besides the county clerk’s office, you may also register to vote at your local city clerk’s office (425-6703), your local library (425- 6372), or the Rooks County Health Department (425-7352). The last day to register so you are eligible to vote in the primary is July 14th.
