With the announcement by Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly Tuesday last week ordering K-12 school buildings close for the rest of the academic year as the state continues to escalate its response to the coronavirus, Kitchen Manager and Food Service Director at Stockton schools, Kay Whitney, is already utilizing a plan for kids’ breakfast and lunches.

“USD 271 is currently serving a bageal. In the one bag, it contains both lunch for the day and tomorrow’s breakfast,” said Whitney.

Just like last year during the Summer Food Service Program, anyone 18 years of age and under can receive a free meal and take it home to enjoy. The child does not have to be from Stockton’s school district. Children, however, must be present for meal pickup.

“We do ask (as a reminder) for people to please stay in their vehicles and we will bring everything to you. Practicing social distancing is for everyone’s safety,” said Whitney.

There are two different sites available for pickup—one in Woodston and one at the Stockton Grade School.

In Woodston, meals will be served in front of the Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

“We are using a school vehicle (look for the USD 271 school decal in the window) to serve meals from,” she stated.

Here in Stockton, meals will be served in Tiger Alley (one-way drive-thru from west to east).

Meals at both locations can be picked up from 11:30 to 12:00 noon Monday through Friday.

The servers ask people to please stay in their vehicles as they will bring everything to you.

“Practicing social distancing is for everyone’s safety,” said Whitney. “We are always so happy to see the kids and parents. If there is a lunch your kids have enjoyed, please reach out and let us know and we will try our best to make it.”

For some meals, home made rolls and buns are menu items.

“Homemade bread is such a treat and everyone loves it,” she said.

In concluding, Whitney stated, “In each bag, we include a slip that has instructions on it. Some items need to be reheated and cold items need to be kept cold until ready to enjoy them. The slip is a helpful reminder to keep food in the right temperatures to enjoy and keep you safe.”

With Easter coming up, there might be a Friday and Monday where we are not serving, but we are unable to confirm at this time.
