Staff Sergeant Samuel Nathan Blatchford, a Navajo Indian, brother of Ruth Kope, of Stockton, was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on April 18, 2006. His was the first of ten funerals held at Arlington that day. His sister was one of many family members who attended the ceremony which began with four jets flying over the site, with one of the planes veering off to the left as a symbol of a soldier who is now gone. As the Chaplain presented the American Flag to Blatchford’s wife, Cecelia, he told her that he had never presided over a ceremony of a soldier more highly-decorated than “Sam.” Another touching part of the ceremony was when a golden eagle flew over the gathering. Sam’s best friend from Santa Fe, N.M. had made arrangements to be at the ceremony and to bring an eagle whistle with him. No one could hear the whistle but the eagle, so the surprise was a very fitting tribute to Sam. Sam’s brother, Paul, a WWII Code Talker, is also buried at Arlington.
