Over $34K worth of property stolen from Saline Co. farmstead, recovered in Park City

SALINA — A farmstead in northern Saline County had property valued over $34,000 taken from it sometime between 4 p.m. Friday, July 31 and 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1st, after someone broke a padlock on a gate at the property, owned by a Salina man. Missing was a white 2011 GMC Sierra 2500HD pickup, a 14-foot enclosed trailer, a 2019 Bad Boy Magnum zero-turn lawnmower, a key from a Polaris Ranger, and a power washer. The pickup and trailer were recovered just east of the QuickTrip at 61st Street North and I-35 in Park City. The power washer and mower are still missing. Authorities are checking surveillance video in the area in an attempt to determine who left the pickup and trailer in that location. (Salina Journal)

COVID cases continue to rise in Phillips County

PHILLIPSBURG — Cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Phillips County with three more positive cases of coronavirus disease confirmed on last week by the Phillips County Health Department. The three cases are not related to the outbreak at Logan Manor. The newest case includes a 45-year-old female; and two males, 68 and 50 years old, who live in the same household. On July 28th, the health department confirmed the eighth death in the county when an 86-year-old male passed away at the Logan Manor. On July 31st, the health department confirmed three additional positive cases related to the outbreak at Logan Manor. These cases included one resident and two staff members. (The Advocate)

No dynamite in vehicle, just a beef stick

KIOWA COUNTY — A little excitement in a small Kansas town last week was nothing serious. Just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, the Greensburg Police Department, Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office, and Greensburg Fire Department were dispatched to the report of dynamite attached to the dash of a vehicle parked in front of a business on West Kansas Avenue in Greensburg, according to the police department’s social media account. Upon units arriving and securing the area it was discovered that the item in question was a beef stick, still in its wrapper. There were no explosives in the vehicle and there were not any threats to the public. The vehicle owner removed the suspicious beef stick from the dash. (HaysPost.com)

Vote brings a new sheriff to town

OBERLIN — Troy Haas, a former Oberlin Chief of Police, ousted 36-year incumbent sheriff Ken Badsky in the Republican primary last week, drawing 536 votes to 240 for the sheriff. A third candidate, former undersheriff Brad Messersmith, had 111 votes. Mr. Haas had 60.5 percent of the vote, Mr. Badsky 27 percent, and Mr. Messersmith 12.5 percent. Haas may likely face no opposition in the November general election, since no one filed for the Democratic nomination. Currently employed as an Oberlin police officer, worked for the sheriff’s department as a reserve deputy for several years, then joined the Oberlin Police Department in 1997. (The Oberlin Herald)

College reaches student-athlete lawsuit settlement

GARDEN CITY — Garden City Community College (GCCC) has reached a settlement with the family and estate of Braeden Bradforth, a former GCCC student athlete who passed away following an intensive pre-season football team workout. GCCC President Dr. Ryan Ruda said college leadership has been diligent in working with all parties involved to come to the mutually agreed settlement, which was recently approved by a court. Woman dies in 2-vehicle crash

RILEY COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before noon last Friday in Riley County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Buick LaCrosse driven by Sylvia A. Harden, 83, Wichita, was eastbound on the entrance ramp to Kansas 18 from Scenic Drive. The driver turned left in the lane of traffic of a 2013 Ford F650 driven by Brad R. Dunlap, 55, Abilene. The Ford struck the Buick on the driver’s side. Both vehicles came to rest on their wheels, partially on the north shoulder and the median. Harden was pronounced dead at the scene. Dunlap was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP. (JCPost.com)

K9 unit helps deputies catch felon with gun, drugs

TOPEKA — Law enforcement authorities are investigating two men on felony charges after a traffic stop. Just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, a deputy conducted a traffic stop in the 5400 block of SW Topeka Boulevard, according to a deputy Abigail Christian. During the traffic stop, a K9 unit was deployed and located a loaded firearm inside the vehicle. Deputies determined the firearm belonged to Jeremy W. Taylor, 31, of Burlingame. He is a multi-convicted felon. Taylor was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of aggravated felon in possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. The driver of the vehicle, Lance E. Fox, 42, of Topeka, was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of driving while license revoked, insurance violation and vehicle registration violations.
