THIS AND THAT

* Who remembers hanging silver tinsel on your Christmas tree? You were either the family that strung it up one string at a time, or threw it on the tree in bunches. Both were acceptable because there is no wrong way to hang tinsel.

* Just want you all to know that when it says “EASY LEVEL” on the Christmas gingerbread house kits, they are not telling the truth!!! My gingerbread creation that I put together looks nothing like the picture on the box!

* And how about that fake snow that drifts down so pretty in the Christmas movies? Not one flake ever lands on a person!

* On December 1st, 1964, the Christmas classic “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” first aired on TV. I have watched it every year since then, and sometimes ten or twenty times during the month of December. But back when I was young, it only aired once during the Christmas season, so my family would be sitting in front of the TV ten minutes early, showered and in our pajamas, with popcorn popped from a kettle to enjoy the show and those special songs. And who remembers the General Electric commercials?

* I have discovered over the past few years that I don’t have to make a variety of Christmas candies or cookies for my family. We are happy with peanut butter balls and sugar cookies with lots of icing and sprinkles!

* I know I have been writing a lot about Christmas in this editorial, but I want to throw this out there for next Thanksgiving. What do you all think of the idea of having a community Thanksgiving dinner for those who live by themselves and couples who aren’t going out of town to visit family or couples whose families aren’t coming home for the holidays? Or for any family for that matter. One of our organizations or volunteers could take up the “soup spoon” and cook the turkeys while everyone else could bring sides or desserts. People would need to sign up early so enough turkeys could be cooked and then sign up to bring a side or dessert that would feed at least eight to ten people. Anyway, details could be worked out if this is something we would like to do in our community. Just an idea…..
