What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1908 — Asa Ives, while listing corn at his place several miles north of town, had with him a 22-calibre rifle, carried to shoot rabbits. The gun accidentally slipped to the ground and discharged, the bullet passing through his hand and striking him full in the forehead, but the ball only splintered the bone and glanced off, passing under the skin for two inches. Others were near him and brought him to town as quickly as possible where his wounds were dressed by Dr. Hinkle. No serious results were expected to follow, but if his hand hadn’t broken the force of the bullet, he would undoubtedly have been killed.
