Jerry and Patty Sterling, proprietors of 183 Lanes in Stockton, had closed for the summer as usual, but this time, the doors would open to a completely renovated bowling alley. The new lanes were AMF 8270s with all solid-state updates including scorekeeping all electronically shown on overhead TV scoreboards.

The 2006 high school football season was underway with the Stockton Tigers set to open on Sept. 1st, hosting the Osborne Bulldogs. The Tigers had a new coach: Benjamin T. Clark, Jr., who was coming from Ingalls High School where he spent a year as the assistant high school football coach and head junior high football coach. Clark was hired to teach American History, American Government and Current Events.

And So They Say — Elenore LeFort: “The Fair isn’t nearly as much fun unless you have some grandkids around.” Wayne Sell, Colorado Springs, Colo.: “I remember in 1935 (I was four), we lived four miles east of Stockton and one south. We were here in town with Dad and we heard a wall of water was coming down the river, so we raced home in the Model T and barely made it home over the bridge before the flood came. I’ll never forget it.” Jana Slansky: “I think the flowers up and down Main Street deserve a Grand Champion ribbon for how pretty they are.”

Showing at the Nova Theatre was “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” starring Will Ferrell.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1950 — Jim, the three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Boyd, was a mass of skin burns as a result of falling from a car. The car was traveling between 50 to 60 miles an hour and the child was riding in the back seat when he decided to roll down the window, but opened the door instead.

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1908 — While going through his grove at dusk, J.B. Low ran a twig in his eye. He came to town in the night, suffering greatly and in the morning the inflamed member was treated by Dr. Stevens. It is in very bad shape and he may lose the sight of it. Somebody’s thermometer recorded 110 degrees in the shade on Sunday, which was conceded to be the hottest day for several years; in fact, there was never a hotter day in the history of the town, it is said, and appears to be the limit for this region.
