* And So They Say: Everett Hughes: “Switzerland is the only country that is really as beautiful as the picture postcards make out.” Ben Winfough: “Just because a man is an ex-service man, that doesn’t mean he’s especially fitted for a public office.” Don Peebles: “The only thing I know is that we all have sore backs, etc. from climbing up on stools and chairs Sunday while invoicing.”

* Elmer J. Pfeifer was in a critical condition in St. Anthony’s Hospital where he was rushed shortly before noon on the Friday before, after suffering severe internal injuries as the result of an explosion at his salvage yard. In spite of the fact that he had been wearing a heavy jacket, his abdomen had been punctured by what was presumed to be a part of a small butane tank. The piece of metal, as large as a man’s hand and as much the same shape on which a valve was attached, had been completely embedded in Pfeifer and slanted upward close to the region of his heart. No one knew exactly what had happened. At first, it was believed that an empty tank thrown into a trash fire had exploded, but further investigation showed an impression in the ground, evidencing where the explosion had occurred several feet from the fire. Pfeifer was knocked approximately 20 feet by the force of the explosion.

* Mr. and Mrs. James Sander were mourning the loss of their beautiful white Collie, Laddie, but endeavored to assuage their grief with a new puppy, also a white collie that they had named Laddie. Their collie always appeared in several of the Sander’s Conoco calendars.

* A crowd of over 500 persons had looked over the fine equipment in the new Shelton Coin Laundry and Dry Cleaning during its open house. A number of them also witnessed a demonstration of the machines.

* Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Bagby had everything in readiness for the opening of the Park Drive-In for the season with a double bill of the movies, “Saskatchewan” starring Alan Ladd and Shelley Winters, and “The Private Lives of Adam and Eve” starring Mickey Rooney, Mamie Van Doren, Paul Anka and Tuesday Weld. Elaborate plans for a grand opening were being made for late May.
