* And So They Say: Betty Harding: “With all the things that are happening in other places, we should all be glad we live in Kansas.” Bernard Carlson: “Outside of numbers, the Messiah chorus at Lindsborg was no better than our local chorus.” Stella Willis: “Well, I hope I’m retired before the bank gets in any more special issue coins.”

* The Stockton National Bank had received 200 of the special 1964 Kennedy half dollars on a Wednesday afternoon and were fresh out of them by Friday morning, Some collectors had put in their applications well in advance of the arrival of the coins and those were taken care of first.

* A deal had been consummated whereby Lee Phelps became the owner and operator of Peebles Drug store as of April 1st, with the name changed to Lee Phelps Cash Drug. With the announcement Peebles stated that he and Mrs. Peebles expected to remain in Stockton. Phelps, who had bought out Roy Snyder in November 1958, had stated that he did not anticipate any changes and would continue as a Rexall store and handle all other lines of merchandise that had proved popular with the store’s customers.

* The new Shelton Coin Laundry and Dry Cleaning establishment at the corner of Main and Elm had been opened. The equipment in the place of business included a Duplex cleaner, a 25-pound washer; four, eight-pound washers; twelve, 12-pound washer; a de-greaser machine; a dying machine and ten dryers.

* A cow belonging to George Thyfault had walked onto the highway twenty-one and a half miles west of Stockton and caused a chain reaction with her action besides getting herself killed. She was struck by a 1956 Ford driven by John Hance and was injured so badly that she had to be destroyed. The car was damaged to the extent of about $300.00. Shortly after the cow was hit, her calf walked onto the highway and had followed her mama in death when it was struck by a Wenzl Cattle truck driving by Vern Collop. There was slight damage to the vehicle. Then before the calf could be removed it was struck again by a car enroute to Chicago.

* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies “Dime with a Halo” starring Barbara Luna and Roger Mobley, and “Saskatchewan” starring Alan Ladd and Shelley Winters.

* Clair Miller had been hired to replace Carroll Hutton as the city patrolman. Clair, who for quite a number of years had operated an automobile body repair shop, he did have some experience as a peace officer, since he had assisted the sheriff on a number of occasions.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: If you’ve never had any friends, you probably don’t have any enemies.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Harold Houser had installed a new doughnut-making machine in his bakery. Everett Hughes had been elected the new city commissioner. Engineers were beginning work on a new 420-foot bridge south of Woodston.

* Rip’s Conoco was celebrating its first birthday party with free treats and a free quart of Conoco oil. Rip’s employees were Mikey Bane, Lee Williams and Ronnie Turnbull.

* On sale at Boyd & Conn supermarket were assorted rose bushes for 79¢ each, ten pounds of potatoes for 59¢, four pounds of Rome Beauty apples for 39¢, and ten center-cut pork chops for 98¢.
