Dolores J. Hackett, age 90, left her earthly home in Grand Forks, N.D. and transitioned to her heavenly home on Friday, January 8, 2021.

Dolores Jeanette Olson was born on the farm May 4, 1930, near Hansboro, N.D., the daughter of Richie and Ena (Jenson) Olson. She grew up in Sarles and graduated from Sarles High School in 1948.

She married Clifford Wayne Hackett on October 24, 1948, together raising 6 children. She was active in several capacities as her children grew. Dolores was a charter member of the Sarles American Legion Auxiliary and a Life Member. She was a 4-H Leader and was involved in Homemakers. She was in a bowling league in Munich several years. Dolores loved to dance—especially the Polka. She was always willing to host a meal for her and Wayne's friends. They were hosts to many out-of-state hunters, with whom they formed lasting friendships. A long-standing tradition was to celebrate at least two holidays each year with the Holsinger family: Thanksgiving at our home, and Christmas Day at theirs. She sewed many clothes for her children and herself. As the grandchildren began to arrive, she crocheted afghans until she had made one especially for each loved one; then she fell in love with quilting for the rest of her life, making them for kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, great-great-grandkids and friends. She and like-minded friends in Sarles formed the Piecemakers Quilting Club; she also belonged to quilt guilds in Devils Lake, Fargo and Grand Forks. Dolores treasured those times. She enjoyed writing her grandchildren handwritten notes, especially for birthdays, and frequent phone calls to visit. Dolores and Wayne would trek to Kansas at least once a year to visit children and grandchildren.

Dolores taught Sunday School several years, and in 1976 as a result of the BGEA Bicentennial United Crusade for Christ (Langdon, ND), she submitted her heart and life over to Jesus Christ. She was involved in Christian Women's and led women's Bible Studies. Whenever she was away from home on a Sunday, she found a church body with whom to worship in that city. Though Dolores readily admitted that she was not articulate, she often found ways to share her faith and the truth of the Gospel with old and new friends, and was instrumental in helping others discover the love of Christ.

Dolores worked 24 years at the Sarles Post Office as a clerk, and then was promoted to Postmaster where she served another five years, retiring in 1994. A highlight of her time in the USPS was attending the National Postal Convention in Hawaii in 1991.

Dolores and Wayne moved from Sarles in 2005 to Fargo, where they resided eight years before Wayne died in 2013. Dolores moved to Grand Forks in 2015 to live with her daughter, Kerry, and nearer to daughter, Stacie. In November 2020, daughter Wendy came to Grand Forks to help take care of her aging mom. It was a privilege to be able to help her be where she wanted to be, at home in her own surroundings, with family. We're grateful to God she was able to be home.

Dolores is survived by her children, Sandra “Sandi” (Michael) Rogers of Stockton, Kan., Kerry Hackett of Grand Forks, Richard (Carole) Hackett of Lusby, Md., Wendy Bos of Wichita, Kan. and Grand Forks, Dennis Hackett (Kathy Creighton) of Stockton, Kan., and Stacie (Rahn) Farder of Alvarado, Minn.; a brother, Ron (Jerri) Olson of Coon Rapids, Minn.; sisters, Bette (Denzil) Lue of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Sharon Digre of Colfax, Wis., and sister Karen McNearney of Minneapolis, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends who will miss her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Wayne; a brother, Raymond Olson; a sister, Freda Herman and son-in-law, Robert Bos Jr.
