Beware of Coronavirus Scams

I’ve never been one to like on-line classes, but this morning I was thinking how fortunate we live in our world where we can take classes remotely and not lose days that have to be made up later when we have other things already planned or scheduled. It’s not the best but it is doable.

Cybercriminals are taking advantage of this uncertain time during the spread of the Coronavirus. Remember to be vigilant about communications related to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Phishing emails are being sent with malicious attachments and links to fraudulent websites enticing you to hand over sensitive information. Also, use caution with social media pleas, texts, or calls related to COVID-19.

Scammers are sending links to malicious websites disguised as COVID-19 maps.  Use verified COVID-19 tracking maps and check the URL of linked websites before clicking.

Tips from the Federal Trade Commission:

  • Don’t click on links from sources you don’t know. They could download viruses onto your computer or device.
  • Watch for emails claiming to be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or experts saying that have information about the virus. For the most up-to-date information about the Coronavirus, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Ignore online offers for vaccinations. There currently are no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges or other prescription or over-the-counter products available to treat or cure Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) — online or in stores.
  • Do your homework when it comes to donations, whether through charities or crowdfunding sites. Don’t let anyone rush you into making a donation. If someone wants donations in cash, by gift card, or by wiring money, don’t do it.

Be smart during this time where there will be a higher usage than normal on the internet. Watch what your kids are doing, and be wary about what sites you are getting into.
