“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, and try again.”

Brandy and Nellie Grimes and their business Funky Junky’s Thrift/Flea Market hope the “third time is a charm” when their doors officially open in Stockton on Wednesday, March 8th.

The business has signed a two-year lease at its former 412 Main Street location. And with that, they’re ready to “reach for the stars” with support from the community and surrounding area.

“We decided six months ago to move closer to family in Emporia,” Brandy stated.

“While it was nice being closer to my son and grandkids, we quickly realized it would be difficult to sustain the move by paying rent on an apartment there while owning a house here.”

Brandy worked for the Salvation Army in Emporia. During that time, she gained valuable knowledge and ideas about the thrift business and realized how much she missed the trade.

Deciding to move back to Stockton checked many of the boxes for the couple.

“Once I was given another opportunity to rent our old location from the Stockton Sentinel, everything began falling into place, and I couldn’t be more excited to be back,” stated Grimes.

“I missed the business, and most of all, I missed our customers. We made so many friends and acquaintances through the business, and being back in a smaller town makes you appreciate all those ‘smaller’ things even more,” she said.

Grimes asks everyone to please be patient as they work to gain inventory.

“A Grand Reopening will be held later once we have had a chance to fill the store,” she said.

If you have a hard time throwing things away but find yourself never using

what’s taking up space at your place, Grimes hopes you will consider donating items by calling her at 785302-0567. She will happily arrange for you to leave your “stuff” at her business, or come and pick it up for you.

One area of the business Grimes intends to expand is renting out tables and shelves.

For $25 a month and 10% of sales, Funky Junky’s is offering all of you creative people an opportunity to showcase your talents to shoppers.

“We found customers enjoy variety, which

includes unique and unusual gift items you can’t just buy anywhere,” said Grimes.

The store will be open four days a week— Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.

Grimes asks you to follow the “happenings” of Funky Junky’s through the Sentinel and Funky Junky’s Facebook page.

“I just want the people to know we are here to stay for at least two years. And with your support, we hope to be here even longer.”
