Students Raise Money For Service Dog

DERBY—Students and Derby’s Park Hill Elementary School have raised more than $900.00 to help train a classmate’s service dog. Each student was asked to bring at least $1.00 to school for the privilege of getting to wear a hat to school. The hat-day fundraiser was organized to benefit five-year-old Corbynn and the companion on which she will rely. Corbynn has epilepsy, and her dog, Remi, is her seizure-response dog. A GoFundMe page has been set up and has raised an extra $1,000.00 to date. (KWCH)

Schools Across Kansas Receive Fake Shooting Calls

Celebration Of Life Held

EMPORIA — Philip Woodbury George, 101, passed away on February 12th in Emporia and was laid to rest on February 25th. While funerals are generally intentional sad occasions, this was not. Apparent laughter, grins, and nodding smiles were commonplace as family, compadres, fellow veterans, and clergy shared remembrances of Phil George serving others. During WWII, Phil participated in multiple significant battles, even sinking the Japanese battleship Yamato, the biggest in the world. He flew more than 25 missions, with the first flights to return over mainland Japan after the Doolittle Raid. Phil earned the Air Medal, Gold Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and Presidential Unit Citation for his combat service. Friend and fellow veteran (serving in Vietnam) Jim Whitaker said, “Probably now, one of the last great heroes of World War II has slipped into history. He flew his plane #129 off the brand new UUS Hornet CV12 for the rest of the war after the original USS Hornet CV8, Skinny Spatz’s boat was sunk during the Battle of Santa Cruz in the Solomons.” (EMPORIA GAZETTE)
