Kansas Cops Seized Over $4 Million In Cash, Property In 2022

TOPEKA— The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has released its 2022 Civil Asset Forfeiture Report, showing law enforcement seized millions in cash and property last year. There were 522 civil asset seizures, with 54.2% of those made following some type of traffic stop. Only 22.8% were seized by warrant. In 80% of those cases, the person was arrested. Under the law, local law enforcement can use seized property and cash to help cover costs like training, equipment, and other approved uses. However, departments have to record all seizures and forfeitures and account for those expenditures in their annual reporting to the KBI. (FOX4 News)

Zoo Celebrates Two-Millionth Visitor

SALINA—It’s two million and counting since the Rolling Hills Zoo welcomed its two-millionth visitor through the gates on Sunday, April 30th. According to the Zoo, executive director Ryan VanZant shared the exciting news with Richard Craft, an unsuspecting Fort Hays State student. Joining him for the visit to the Zoo were his girlfriend, Karah Strecker, mother, Rose Marie Craft, sister, Rachel Hale and his two-year-old niece, Grace Lynn Hale. As the Zoo’s two-millionth visitor, Craft received a gift basket valued at over $575.00, including a Rolling Hills Zoo Family Membership, a $200.00 RHZ gift certificate, and a private golf cart tour of the Zoo. Sheridan Co. K9 To Receive Body Armor From National Nonprofit

SHERIDAN COUNTY—K9 Zeus with the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to the charitable donation from the nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc. Zeus’ vest is sponsored by a fundraiser hosted by Brittany Piccola of Watchung, NJ and will be embroidered with the sentiment “In honor of Nancy Plis.” (Hays Post)

Thieves Stealing And Selling Pipes From Kansas Oil Fields

NESS COUNTY—Thieves have found a new way to make money. They are targeting the pipes at Kansas oil fields. Ness County Undersheriff Patrick Zippittelli said it is “pretty rampant” in western Kansas, primarily rural areas. He said the pipe is made of some form of steel. He suggests that companies check their property regularly and put up security measures, such as hidden cameras. (KSN News)

Small Plane Struck Electrical Line, Makes Safe Landing In Kansas

COWLEY COUNTY—A Kansas pilot was fortunate to avoid an airplane crash following an incident in Cowley County on Tuesday, May 2nd. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Zenith Stol CH 75 fixed-wing single-engine aircraft piloted by Timothy Dextor McCall, 65, Derby, was northbound, north of Udall, when the pilot stated he was having engine problems. The airplane lost altitude and struck an electrical line. He was able to continue his flight to Cook Airport in Rosehill. (Hays Post)
