Kimball “Kim” Lynn Brainard, age 72, of Plainville, passed away Friday, November 3, 2023, at Hays Medical Center in Hays.

He was born February 28, 1951, in Colby, Kansas, to Dorothy (Sloan) and Jesse Brainard of Selden.

Kim attended Selden Grade School and Hoxie High School, graduating in 1969. He attended the Northwest Kansas Area Vocational Technical School in Goodland, graduating in 1971. He enlisted in the Air Force, serving in the 436 Transport Squadron at Dover Air Force Base as a Special Vehicle Repairman for the C5 airplane from 1972 to 1974 after attending Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, in 1971. He married Kathy Spresser in 1972, later divorcing. He married Eleanor Wherry in 1997.

Kim worked in the agricultural field, farming with family. He joined the Coop system and became a petroleum manager, serving at various locations in Kansas, Iowa, and Colorado before retiring in 2016. He enjoyed woodworking and spent time in his shop creating wood items. He enjoyed socializing with friends and family.

Kim is survived by his wife, Eleanor Wherry of Plainville; his daughter, Beth (Brainard) Harmon and her husband, Trevor Harmon, and his grandchildren, Chloe Harmon and Toby Harmon of Bennington; his stepdaughter, Rebecca Rowlison and her husband, Sam Martin, of Fort Collins, Colo.; his sister Sharon Karns of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his brother Tim Brainard and wife Cindy of Phoenix, Ariz.; and his twin sister, Camille Applegate, of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Dorothy (Sloan) Brainard, and his brother, Robert Brainard.

Memorial Services to celebrate Kim’s life and honor his memory will be held at the Selden United Methodist Church in Selden, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 10, 2023. Inurnment with military honors will follow in the Selden Cemetery.

Memorial visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Kim's name.
