Fans from Stockton and Plainville were treated to an exciting night of Mid-Continent League basketball last Friday when the two teams met in Tiger Gymnasium. After Stockton picked up two junior varsity wins, the Lady Tigers captured an exciting, 56-53 overtime victory over Plainville, but the Stockton boys ended up losing a hard-fought 46-45 contest.

The Tiger teams are now off until the new year when Stockton hosts Golden Plains on Tuesday, January 7.

Lady Tigers vs. Plainville

Stockton’s game with the Lady Cardinals was close the entire way, with the Lady Tigers trailing 10-8 after the first quarter, but leading 22-20 at halftime.

Plainville senior Aubrey Dewey’s jumper a minute into the third quarter knotted the score at 22-all, but over the next minute and a half, Macy Odle, a senior for Stockton, made a free throw and later made a shot to give the Lady Tigers a 25-22 lead.

A three-pointer by Halli Friend at the 4:08 mark of the third period regained a 27-25 lead for the Lady Cards, but a basket by Stockton’s Olivia Dix, and two free throws by Shae Griffin put the Lady Tigers back on top, 30-27. Unfortunately Plainville was able to finish out the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 34-30 lead into the fourth period.

Tatum Hamilton scored on a layup to open the fourth quarter pulling Stockton back within two, 34-32, but the Lady Cards would go on to lead by as much as nine points on three occasions.

With 5:17 left to play in regulation, the Lady Tigers, down 44-35, began a run of their own, however, when Dix hit a shot to cut the margin to seven, 44-37. Over the next three minutes Dix would add two free throws and another bucket, while Hamilton made a layup to cut the deficit to one, 44-43, with 3:14 remaining.

A basket by Ashlynn Stamper a few seconds later pushed Plainville’s lead back to three, 46-43, but again the Lady Tigers answered with a run, taking their largest lead of the game, 51-46, on a trey by Chloe Plumer with 1:33 left on the clock. Over the next minute the Lady Cards would crawl back into it, as Stockton lost two of its players, Olivia Dix and Ellie Bellerive, to fouls. With 35 seconds remaining, Dewey hit a shot for Plainville which tied the game at 51-51, and the game eventually went into overtime.

A minute into OT, Griffin was able to score, and with 1:48 left she sank two free throws to give the Lady Tigers a 55-51 lead. Cosima Von Huelsen added a free throw a minute later to give Stockton a 56-51 advantage. Odle committed her fifth foul with 28 seconds remaining in overtime, sending her to the bench. Brooke Nuss would hit both ensuing free throws for the Lady Cards to make it a one possession game, 56-53.

Plainville ended up fouling the Lady Tigers with 10 seconds to go, but neither free throw would fall, giving the Lady Cards one more chance. Fortunately, a long three-pointer by Dewey was off the mark and Stockton held on for the 56-53 win, improving to 4-1 on the season, 2-0 in league play.

Sophomore Olivia Dix scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Lady Tigers. Shae Griffin and Tatum Hamilton each added 12 points.

Plainville was led by Aubrey Dewey with 14 points. Jersey Kaiser and Halli Friend added 10 points each.

Tiger Boys vs. Plainville

The Stockton-Plainville boys’ game was every bit as exciting as the girls’ contest, but for Tiger fans the outcome wasn’t what they hoped for. Thanks to junior Ethan Means, Stockton jumped out to a 7-2 lead, and a conventional three-point play, followed by a shot from behind the arc by Kameran Hamel gave the Tigers a 13-2 advantage at the 2:23 mark of the opening quarter.

Over the next two minutes Plainville went on a 7-0 run, and were back within four, 13-9, with 26 seconds left in the first period. Means added a jumper for Stockton as the quarter came to an end, pushing the Tigers’ lead back to six, 15-9, going into the second quarter.

Cardinal senior Jared Casey took over the second quarter, and by its end Plainville owned a 21-19 advantage, with Quinn Coffey’s shot at the buzzer giving Stockton two of its four points in the period.

Kameran Hamel scored to open the second half, tying the game at 21-all, and the third quarter would be a tight one throughout with the lead changing hands several times. A basket by Gage Conyac at the 4:37 mark of the third put the Tigers up 25-23, and Josh Coleman’s trey a minute and a half later regained a 28-27 lead for the home team. With 2:21 left Means’ shot gave Stockton a 30-29 advantage, but Casey was able to score five points over the next two minutes to give Plainville a 34-32 lead going into the final eight minutes.

A bucket by Kaiden Van-Schuver a minute into the fourth pushed the Cardinals’ lead to three, 35-32, but a basket two minutes later by Stockton’s Ben Rogers got the Tigers back within one, 35-34. Plain-ville would go on to lead 40-36 before Trevor Miller hit a trey, followed by a basket by Hamel which gave Stockton a 41-40 lead with just under three minutes to go.

Over the next two minutes the teams battled, exchanging baskets, with Coffey’s basket with 59 seconds remaining tying the score at 45-45. The Tigers would get the ball with 35 seconds left, but a turnover with 15 seconds remaining gave Plainville a chance to win the game.

The Cardinals put the ball in Casey’s hands, and despite tough defense, he drove the lane and was fouled with just 0:0.3 seconds showing on the clock. Casey was able to knock down his first free throw, and intentionally missed his second free throw and got the rebound to secure the 46-45 win for Plainville. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 1-4 on the season, 0-2 in league play.

Ethan Means led Stockton in scoring with 19 points. Kameran Hamel added 10.

Jared Casey scored a game-high 31 points for the Cardinals.
