RoCo Softball girls go 1-3 last week

The RoCo Softball girls split their doubleheader last Monday against the Spearville Lady Lancers, but fell in both games in their matchup with Sylvan- Lucas last Thursday to go 1-3 on the week. Their season record now stands at 2-4.

RoCo vs. Spearville

Game One

Despite getting 22 hits in the game to Spearville’s 18, the RoCo girls fell to the visitors in Game One by the score of 11-10.

Bodye Stithem recorded four of those hits, going 4-5 in the contest. Jolyn Johnson, Rylan Weltmer, Emma Fuzzell, Brylee Horting and Trinity Arpin each had three hits.

RoCo led 2-1 going into the second inning, but the Lady Lancers put up six runs in the top of the second to take a 7-2 advantage. RoCo added four hits in the bottom of the inning, to pull within one, 7-6, but the visitors added another run in the top of the third to lead 8-6.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, RoCo pulled within one again (10-9), but Spearville held on for an 11-10 win.

Briley Gosselin went the distance on the mound, allowing 11 runs on 18 hits. She walked four batters and struck out six.

Game Two

Again, RoCo outhit their opponents in Game Two, 16-10, but this time they came away with a victory, defeating the Lady Lancers 15-9.

RoCo took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning to lead 4-0 going into the third, but a six-run third inning for Spearville gave the visitors a 6-4 advantage. A ninerun sixth inning was what ended up propelling RoCo to the 15-9 win.

Emma Fuzzell and Josey Bice had three hits each in the contest, with Fuzzell collecting seven RBIs.

Brin Muir faced 34 batters in her seven innings pitched, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits. She walked four batters and struck out five.

RoCo vs. Sylvan-Lucas

Game One

The RoCo Cardinals lost a close one on the road last Thursday falling to the Sylvan- Lucas Unified Mustangs by the score of 5-4.

The Mustangs led 4-0 after two innings of play, but RoCo answered with four runs in the top of the third to tie it up. Unfortunately, Sylvan-Lucas scored a run in the bottom of the third and that would be enough to hold on for the 5-4 win.

Sara Whitney, Brylee Horting, Trinity Arpin, and Bodye Stithem each had two hits in the contest. Jolyn Johnson had two RBIs, and Arpin and Stithem each had one.

On the mound for RoCo was Brin Muir who faced 29 batters. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out six. She threw 106 pitches with 63 of them strikes.

Game Two

Although RoCo held their opponents to just five runs in Game Two of the doubleheader with Sylvan-Lucas, the offense couldn’t muster a run despite getting five hits in the game, resulting in a 5-0 loss for RoCo.

The Lady Mustangs scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, three in the fourth, and one in the five to earn the 5-0 win, and drop RoCo’s record to 2-4 on the season.

Brylee Horting was responsible for two of the Lady Cardinals’ five hits, with Rylan Weltmer, Brin Muir and Trinity Arpin each adding a hit.

Briley Gosselin pitched for RoCo, throwing 77 pitches (55 of them strikes), to the 25 batters she faced. She gave up five runs on nine hits.

This week RoCo will travel to Ness City for a doubleheader on Tuesday, the 16th, and on Friday, the 19th, they will be on the road to Beloit. Games start at 4:00 p.m. at each location. On Tuesday, April 23rd, RoCo will be back at home hosting Republic County at 3:00 p.m.
