Tiger boys win two more MCL games

The 2020 Mid-Continent League Basketball Tournament, which began on Saturday, January 19, with play-in games, continued through last Saturday, the 26th, when the champions were crowned. The Trego Lady Eagles defeated Phillipsburg to win the girls title, while the TMP boys downed Phillipsburg to capture the championship. The Hoxie girls and Ellis boys finished third, downing Smith Center and Hill City, respectively.

The Lady Tigers ended up placing 10th after beating Hill City on Thursday 46-22, but losing to Plainville on Saturday 47-60. The Stockton girls now own a record of 5-7 on the season.

The Tiger boys picked up two wins to improve to 6-6 thus far. On Thursday Stockton defeated Smith Center 48-43, and on Saturday the Tigers avenged an earlier loss to Oakley, downing them 45-35.

This week Stockton will get back to regular season play, traveling to Northern Valley on Tuesday, and then hosting the Smith Center Redmen on Friday night with games beginning at 4:00 p.m. On Monday, February 3, the Tiger teams will host Phillips-burg with action also starting at 4:00 p.m.

Lady Tigers vs. Hill City

One of the backside bracket games played on Thursday in Stockton was between the Lady Tigers and Hill City. The Stockton girls used big second and third quarters to pull away from their opponents and claim the 46-22 victory.

The Lady Tigers led 5-4 after the first quarter, but outscored Hill City 17-7 in the second period to lead 22-11 at the intermission. Stockton made four treys in the third quarter, three by Shae Griffin and one by Chloe Plumer, to score another 17 points, which extended the lead to 39-15 going into the final eight minutes, and Stockton went on to win 46-22.

Shae Griffin had a game-high 25 points, including five treys, for the Lady Tigers, while Olivia Dix added 11.

Hill City was led by Breckan Born with 6 points.

Tiger Boys vs. Smith Center

Thursday’s game between Stockton and the Redmen from Smith Center was close throughout, but in the end it was the Tigers who pulled out the 48-43 win.

Stockton trailed 8-7 after the first quarter, and was down 20-17 at the intermission. Four treys by the Tigers, two by Ethan Means and one each by Josh Coleman and Troy Rogers, led to a 14-point third period for Stockton, and the Redmen would only score 4 points, resulting in a. 31-24 lead for the Tigers going into the fourth quarter. Although Stockton gave up 19 points in the final eight minutes, the Tigers were able to score 17 points to hold on for the 48-43 victory.

Ethan Means scored a game-high 22 points to lead Stockton, with Josh Coleman adding 10.

The Redmen were led by Ayden Long with 15 points. Trenton Colby added 11.

Lady Tigers vs. Plainville

The Stockton Lady Tigers spotted Plainville 10 points before scoring their first basket of Saturday’s game at the 3:29 mark of the opening period, making the score 10-2. The Lady Tigers would fight that deficit the rest of the way, unable to make up the difference.

Stockton trailed the Lady Cards 16-6 after the first quarter, and 31-21 at halftime. After three quarter the Lady Tigers were behind 47-32, and they went on to fall by 13, 60-47.

Stockton was led in scoring by Olivia Dix and Shae Griffin who scored 12 and 11 points respectively.

Aubree Dewey led Plainville with a game-high 27 points. Halli Friend added

Tiger Boys vs. Oakley

After falling to the Oakley Plainsmen just over a week earlier, the Stockton boys were able to avenge the loss to the Plainsmen by downing them 45-35 in the game for 9th place held on Saturday morning in Plainville.

The Tigers led 12-8 after the first quarter and were up 23-16 at the intermission. Although Oakley outscored Stockton in the third quarter 12-11, the Tigers still owned a 33-28 advantage going into the fourth period and ended up winning by double digits, 45-35.

Ethan Means and Josh Coleman led Stockton in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Plainsmen were led by Dane Scheetz with a game-high 16 points.
