What Was Going On 14 Years Ago

Larry and Narine Barnett of Stockton were host parents of Seonjin Na, from the city of Guang-ju, in the town of Unnam Dong Country, in the country of South Korea. Seonjin comes from a city with a very large population, so her first impression of Stockton was one that is quiet and comfortable since there is such a small population and not a lot of buildings. Seonjin has one brother, Ki-moon Na who was 15 years old. Her mother, Jeong-sook is a teacher and her father, Jang-un Na was an apartment manager. Stockton’s Municipal Power Plant was celebrating 100 years of service. A new sign had recently been erected near the building, with the date 'EST. 1908' imprinted. An Open House was scheduled at the Power Plant on Saturday, Oct. 25. An impressive story was featured in this edition that was prepared by the public relations firm of Morri-son-Gottlieb of New York City that had appeared in several of the trade publications in 1956.

The Rooks County Health Center Auxiliary was celebrating its 25th Anniversary on Oct. 30, 2008, beginning with their regular monthly meeting followed by an anniversary celebration with lunch for the auxiliary members followed up by a public reception of cake and refreshments in the hospital cafeteria.

Five of the Webster Dam Babes of the Red Hat Society met Oct. 13, as guests of the Hays After Five Ladies Group. Those attending the evening activities were: Elna Kollman, Donna Swaney, Wanda Kreller, Linda Brin and Shirley Beiker.

The Stockton Junior High Tigers finished their football season at 3-4 after a 34-22 loss at the home of the Osborne Bullpups. Closing out their junior high eighth-grade season were Koby Beougher, Nolan Weiser, Micah Baughman, Peter Sabell, Brandon Kollman, Zach Gumtau, Micah Moll and Zach Lowry.

The Stockton Tigers were defeated by Western Plains by the score of 32-6. With the loss, Stockton fell to 2-5 on the season, 0-3 in district play. Western Plains improved to 5-2, 2-1 in district action.

Members of the 2008 Stockton Pee Wee Tiger Football team were: Kieran Graf, Joel Green, Erik Scott, Kyle Hull, Nolan Lowry, Tristan Williams, Landon Becker, Shea Ward, Caleb Eck, Ethan Hamel, Tyler Morris, Andrew Bellerive, Cayden Conyac, Ryan Allen, Tyler Williams, Taten Pulec, Justin Wiltfong, Casey Deutscher, Kale Kuhlmann, Christian Hamel, Gannon Spiess, Daylan Carlson, and Braden Higdon. Coaches were Mark Lowry, Bruce Deutscher and Kirk Green.

Jim and Linda Paley of Stockton proudly announced the arrival of a baby grandson, Aaron Daniel Hart, born Oct. 7, 2008, to Dan and Marsha Hart of Chippewa Falls, Wise.

Obituaries were published for Lilian E. Welker (1913) and LaDonna JoAnna Schneider (1932).

Looking Back 14 Years Ago (1994) — Grade and concrete work was progressing on the second phase of the new middle school. Most of those attending a special town meeting agreed a 1/2cent sales tax was needed to keep the Manor open.

After 18 years, Viola Vielguth was retiring from Dino Discount. Trevor VanEaton accidentally shot himself in the big toe.

We had our first freeze, with one night dropping to 20 degrees.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1952 — Tragedy struck on Main Street when Reva Meyers, age 20, died while en route to her work at the Peebles Drug Store. Cause of her death was given as coronary thrombosis.
