Phillips Co. law officers call for help with standoff

PHILLIPSBURG — Friday evening, shortly after 6 p.m., Phillips County Sheriffs Office deputies responded to a report of a suspicious subject in the 1200 block of Cable Road. Deputies attempted to make contact with the subject shortly after their arrival. When deputies approached the residence door, a gunshot was heard from inside. Neither deputy was injured.The deputies took cover and called for assistance. Attempts to contact the subject were unsuccessful and numerous gunshots were fired inside the residence. Deputies did not return fire. Assistance was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol and numerous Troopers responded. At approximately 1:15 a.m. the suspect surrendered without incident. Russell Hosier, 62, Phillipsburg was arrested, and charges of Aggravated Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer, Criminal Damage to Property and Criminal Discharge of a Firearm are pending. He remains in custody with a $70,000 bond.

Police report more counterfeit cash in Kansas

COWLEY COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating more counterfeit cash in Kansas. On Thursday, the Arkansas City Police Department learned of counterfeit bills making their way through vendors and other local businesses during theArkalalah Festival, according to the police department. The bill is similar to others recovered in the community. The paper does feel different from normal currency. There is an area whited-out on both the front and back of the suspect bills. Law enforcement is asking everyone to carefully inspect bills larger than $20.

Undercover deputies arrest 2 Kansas men, recover stolen tractor

DICKINSON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating two Kansas men in connection with theft and drug allegations. On Tuesday, Oct. 25, the Dickinson County Sheriff received a report of a suspicious Craigslist post that involved a John Deere 4044R tractor, valued at $36,645, according to a media release. Investigators learned the tractor had been stolen from Prairieland Partners in Abilene. As the investigation continued, undercover officers made arrangements to purchase the tractor. The undercover officers met with the suspects and started to discuss the purchase of the tractor that was in possession of the suspects. As a result, deputies arrested Alan T. Kosakowski and Joshua D. Baker, both of Salina, and recovered the tractor. At the time of the arrest, the Sheriff’s Office utilized the Abilene Police Department K9 and determined the suspects were also in possession of methamphetamine and marijuana. Kosakowski and Baker are being held in the Dickinson Co. Jail on requested charges that include felony theft, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of marijuana. Woman walking her dog struck, killed by SUV

WICHITA — A woman walking her dog died in a pedestrian accident last Wednesday in Wichita. A 2001 Chevy Suburban driven by an 82-year-old woman was northbound on Oliver at 2nd Street in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo. The SUV struck 69-year-old Ellen Edens of Wichita who was walking her dog and was crossing the roadway in a marked crosswalk. EMS and Wichita Fire rendered emergency medical aid to Edens, but she and the dog succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators are still looking into the circumstances of the collision. (KWCH)

Hays Middle School Assistant Principal donates kidney to 8th-grade teacher

HAYS — A match at Hays Middle School has created a special connection between an assistant principal and an eighth-grade teacher. Recovering from surgery, Hays Middle School Assistant Principal Shauna Zweifel is thankful she was able to donate a kidney to eighth-grade English teacher Meagan Englert. “I kept telling myself, ‘if this is meant to be, God’s going to make it happen,’” Zweifel said of her time waiting to learn if she was a match. “So, He made it happen.” After a gamut of tests, the assistant principal was cleared to donate. Following the transplant, Zweifel reported the kidney “started working right away.” Her gift inspired Hays Middle School students, challenging each class to donate change in an effort they are calling “Coins for Kidneys,” to help with medical bills from the transplant. Oakley man dies after ejected when pickup overturns

GOVE COUNTY—A man died in an accident just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in Gove County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Dodge Ram driven by Leon B. Zerr, 66, Oakley, was southbound on County Road 30, four- and one-half miles south of Grinnell. The pickup left the roadway to the left, overturned, and the driver was ejected. Zerr was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Baalman Mortuary. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP. (HaysPost.com)
