Reward offered after cattle reported stolen in NW Kansas

RAWLINS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged cattle theft in northwest Kansas. According to a media release from the sheriff's office, a member of the Kansas Livestock Association reported that 17 head of 200-350 pound calves were stolen in mid-July ten miles northeast of Atwood. The calves carry fresh brands of V arrow high on the right hip.The Kansas Livestock Association is offering a $5,000.00 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. (Hays Post)

Two arrested following robbery in Ellis

ELLIS—On Tuesday, August 15th, officers from the Ellis Police Department were dispatched to Casey's General Store in Ellis for a robbery report. The victim reported that two males in an SUV with Florida plates had taken money out of his hand and fled the area. Officers arrived on the scene shortly after the call was dispatched and searched the immediate area of the incident for the suspect vehicle. Officers gathered a description of the suspects and their vehicle and had it broadcast to other law enforcement agencies in the area. The suspects were located at the 165 eastbound mile marker on Interstate 70 that evening by the Kansas Highway Patrol. Using a photograph of the suspects, the victim was able to confirm the suspects who were stopped were the ones involved in the incident. The suspects were identified as Ungurel Andrei Mutu, 32, of Romania, and Dragos Iosif Grozavu, 31, also of Romania.A juvenile was also in the vehicle. The two men were placed under arrest without incident and transported to the Ellis County Jail, where they are being held on requested robbery charges. (Hays Post)

Kansas police chief resigns and is accused of child sex crimes

BUTLER COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating one of their own for alleged child sex crimes. On Tuesday, August 15th, the Eldorado Police Department, with the assistance of the Kansas Internet Crimes Against Children's Task Force and the Butler County Sheriff's Office, conducted an investigation reported by way of a cyber tip, received from the National Center of Missing And Exploited Children (NCMEC), alleging the sexual exploitation of children through the use of electronic devices, according to a media release from El Dorado Police. This investigation led to the arrest of 38-year-old Joel Womochil of El Dorado and requested charges have been submitted through the Butler County District Court. Womochil resigned as Burns Police Chief last week, and the City is searching for a new police chief, according to the mayor's office. The El Dorado Police Department is dedicated to investigating these crimes to aid in the protection of children in their community. This will greatly benefit the community in addressing this particularly heinous crime. Kansas man arrested, accused of selling fentanyl in Harvey County

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple drug allegations. Just after 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15th, sheriff's deputies and detectives executed a search warrant at Finer Mobile Home Park in Great Bend, according to Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir. The search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation related to illegal drugs and outstanding arrest warrants. Deputies gained entry to the residence without resistance and located Chet Whetham, 35, of Great Bend, who had outstanding warrants from Harvey County for the distribution of fentanyl. During the course of the investigation, sheriff officers discovered methamphetamine, fentanyl tablets, marijuana and suspected fentanyl powder. Whetham was transported to the Barton County Jail and booked on the Harvey County warrant, as well as requested charges of distribution of fentanyl and various other drug-related charges for Barton County. Whetham is being held in lieu of a $50,000.00 bond for Harvey County and an additional bond for Barton County. The Sheriff's Office had requested assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for this operation. The KBI has recently added several K9s and handlers who are specifically trained in the detection of fentanyl. Further arrests from the search warrant are anticipated in the near future. Kansas woman lost $1,100.00 in a PayPal scam

COFFEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a phone scam. According to police, a Burlington, Kansas woman was scammed out of $1,100.00 on August 8th. She received a call from someone posing as David Thirolf with PayPal. The man told her someone had taken money from her account, but he could help her get it back and catch the thief. He told her to purchase prepaid cards and give him the information on the back of them. She went to Dollar General and Family Dollar and purchased one Gamestop card at each store. The victim claims she only gave Thirolf information off one card, but when the police checked the cards, all the money was gone from both cards. (Hays Post)
