Two vehicle crash ends with car landing in pond

TOPEKA—A car was pulled out of a pond on Monday, September 10th, after it was involved in a two-vehicle crash at a west Topeka Intersection at SW 6th and Gage. Police said a black Chevrolet Malibu and a red Dodge pickup truck collided in the intersection. The impact sent the Chevrolet over the curb on the southeast corner of the intersection, and its front end came to rest at a pond located near the Stormont Vail Behavioral Health Center. The driver of the Chevrolet, who authorities said is pregnant, was transported by American Medical Response Ambulance to a local hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. No injuries were reported to the occupants of the Dodge truck, which came to rest facing SE 6th Avenue just east of Gage. (WIBW)

Winner of the Keystone Light UTV is Perry Riebel

HAYS—The winner was drawn live at halftime of the Fort Hays State University football game on Thursday evening, September 7th. Perry Riebel registered on June 21st at Fossil Station Convenience Store in Russell. He outlasted 27 total finalists to be the LAST name pulled out of the bucket to win the beautiful Keystone Light UTV. Fourteen on-location broadcasts occurred throughout June, July, August, and September. The average number of entries from each on-location broadcast was about 200. (Hays Post)

24/7 Travel Store plaza planned for Hays north of Interstate 70

HAYS—Triplett, Inc., Salina, wants to build a 24/7 Travel Store truck stop north of Interstate 70 at west Hays exit 157. The company has requested a tax increment financing district in the City of Hays for the $11 million proposed project. The company also plans to request a community improvement district and use industrial revenue bonds for the property at the southeast corner of 230th Avenue and 55th Street. The land was recently annexed into the City, and the zoning changed from agricultural to commercial. Triplett already operates a small 24/7 Travel store in Hays, located south of Interstate Exit 159. Two hospitalized after winds blew trucks over on I-70

GOVE COUNTY—The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Freightliner semi driven by Mario L. Swain, 33, Branson, Missouri, was parked on the on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 70 at Park when the wind blew over the truck and trailer on Saturday, September 9th. EMS transported a passenger in the vehicle, Darius Knowlton, 60, of Springfield, Missouri, to Gove County Medical Center. Swain was not injured. A 2019 Freightliner driven by 39-year-old Yahannes A. Wedajo, Denver, Colorado, four miles east of this accident, was parked on the right shoulder of westbound Interstate 70. Due to the storm, high winds blew the vehicle onto the driver’s side and slid the vehicle and trailer across both lanes, where it came to rest partially in the median and the passing lane of travel. EMS transported Wedajo to the Logan County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. (Hays Post.)

Tribute for Kansas high school football photographer who died after sideline accident

WICHITA—A Kansas high school football team paid tribute to their longtime photographer following her death on Friday, September 8th, four days after an accidental hit on the sidelines of a junior varsity game she was photographing. Linda Gregory died a few hours before the Friday game. The 69-year-old woman had fallen backward and struck her head on concrete while taking pictures on September 4th at the junior varsity match-up between Wichita Northwest High School and rival Bishop Carroll High. Mel Gregory, who owned a local photography business with his wife and was her photography partner, joined several family members at Northwest’s game against Heights High School on Friday, just like the couple had done for years.All the players wore “LG” stickers on their helmets that will be there all season. There was a moment of silence in her honor before kickoff. The Gregorys started taking pictures of Northwest High sporting events in 2014. (Hays Post)

Decapitated elk found along I-70 near Colby

THOMAS COUNTY—An elk was reported hit by a vehicle on Wednesday morning, September 13th, on Interstate 70 east of Colby, according to a social media report from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Game Wardens.
