Hill City bar under fire for racist sign

HILL CITY—A sign posted in a bar in Hill City sparked vandalism at the business, resulting in the local chamber of commerce moving its annual banquet. Someone took a picture of the sign the Cowboy Junction owner posted, which went viral on Facebook . Following the Facebook post, someone spray-painted the message “KKK Club” on the outdoor sign of the club. County Sheriff Cole Presley said the department had no suspects in the vandalism case of the outdoor sign, which is still under investigation. (Hays Post)

Kansas sheriff’s K-9 killed during arrest of robbery suspect

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a Sheriff’s Officer K-9 died during an arrest. Just before noon on Thursday, November 16th, the Wichita Police Domestic Intervention and Violence Reduction team was in the area of Pawnee and Rock attempting to locate a 24-year-old robbery suspect, according to Wichita Police Lt. Aaron Moses. Just after noon, the police found the suspect, but he fled into a creek bed, barricaded himself in a storm drain, and refused to come out. Sheriff’s deputies and police used extended leashes and sent a K-9 officer into the drain.There was an altercation between the suspect and Sedgwick County K-9 Bane. The dog was pronounced deceased on the scene. The suspect was finally taken into custody and transported for treatment of minor injuries from the K-9. After the suspect is released, police will book him into the Sedgwick County Detention Center. (Hays Post)

Progress ahead of schedule on the Ness City Pool

NESS CITY—Project manager Joey Labosky of Carrothers Construction out of Paola, Ks. stated that the new pool project was nearly one-third completed. The base of the new pool is almost finished, with the sides poured soon. Mayor Kuhlman noted that she learned the crew will be done in early May if things keep going well. (Ness County News)

Northwest Kansas teen hospitalized after crash during police chase

WALLACE COUNTY—A Kansas teen was injured in an accident during a police chase just before 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 19th, in Wallace County. Colby Police were in pursuit of a 2006 Pontiac G6 driven by Wesley K. I. Stegeman, 18, of Colby, westbound on U.S. 40 just west of County Road 21, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. The driver lost control and struck a legally parked semi unoccupied in the Wallace County construction zone. EMS transported Stegeman to Goodland Regional Medical Center. (Hays Post)

Snowfall amount broke decades-old record

WICHITA—Wichita’s snowfall amount from Saturday, November 25th, broke a decades-old record as the National Weather Service in Wichita recorded 7.8 inches of snow at Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. The previous record for the same day was 6.8 inches of snowfall on November 25th, 1952, according to records dating back to 1888. (The Wichita Eagle)

Kansas woman dead, man hospitalized after head-on crash

JEFFERSON COUNTY—The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that on Thursday, November 23rd, just before 6:00 p.m., a 1999 Pontiac GrandAm driven by Rebecca K. Bryant, 81, Oskaloosa, was southbound on U.S. 59 just north of 118th Street. The car traveled left of center and struck a northbound 2005 Hyundai Sonata driven by Jesse M. Breshears, 33, McLouth, headon. Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Barnett Funeral Home. EMS transported Breshears to KU Medical Center. According to the KHP, both drivers were properly restrained. (Hays Post)

Criminal hunting investigation

MIAMI COUNTY—On November 15th, Miami County Kansas Game Warden Falls received a call from a landowner about trespassing taking place by individuals wearing camouflage and carrying crossbows, according to a social media report from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Falls responded to the area and started a K-9 track from the suspects’ vehicles parked on public property. K-9 India located the hunters' tracks and followed their trail. During the track, Indy was alerted to the base of a tree near the track. Under branches and leaves, Indy located a blue trash bag containing what appeared to be deer meat. K-9 Indy then continued tracking the hunters, finding them a short time later, taking a deer off private property. Charges are pending for criminal hunting. A citation was issued for the untagged deer. (Hays Post)
