Jack Marston passed away on March 14, 2024, at the Homestead of Russell in Russell, Kansas, at the age of 94.

He was born on January 25, 1930, in Plainville, Kansas, the youngest of four children to Charles and Anna Marston. He graduated from Plainville High School in 1948 and married his high school sweetheart, Doris (Louise) Brotemarkle, not long afterward.

As with all children born in 1930, his childhood was marked by the wind and dust that became the trademark of those years. His family was not spared the difficulties and scarcities common to all families of the Great Plains.

When WWII broke out, Jack was eleven years old. Because the young men and women went off to war, the old men, women, girls, and boys were left to “fight on the home front.” Jack’s first job was at Walker Air Base in the war's earliest days. He and his friends were given charge over the pop supply on the base to ensure that the pop was given to the soldiers and not stolen. Their payment was all the pop the young boys could drink.

Once the War ended, he worked at a Service Station in Plainville, and after graduation, he started his life as a butcher. He worked at Safeway in Hays and other grocery stores in Ellis and Great Bend before they used electric meat saws, and all meat was cut by hand. He, Louise, and their young daughter Patricia (Pattie) then moved to Russell, Kansas, where he worked for Klemas IGA. For a number of years, he also delivered bread for the Rainbow Bread Company on Sundays.

Jack was a butcher for 61 years, and he and Louise were married for 66 years. He had a reserved sense of humor, loved to fish and hunt, and loved to work with wood.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Louise Marston; his parents, Charles and Anna Marston; his brothers, Fred and Delmar; and his great-granddaughter, Catalina Shea.

He is survived by his daughter Patricia and Roy Rein; his sons David Marston (Susan) and their children and grandchildren; son Mark Marston (Beth) and their daughters; and sister Doris Casey.

A Graveside Service will be held on April 2nd at 1:00 pm at the Russell Cemetery in Russell, Kansas. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, will direct the service, and Pastor Mike Ketchens will officiate.
