Kevin States had won big when he purchased a Starry Night Bingo scratch ticket. The cost of the ticket was $2.00, and the jackpot was $10,000.00!

Seven-time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr raced at the Rooks County Free Fair. Several of the motorcycle community were on their way home from the annual trip to Sturgis, South Dakota, and decided to take in some of the county fairs and races along the route and Carr just happened to be one of them, making the races even more exciting.

An obituary was published for April Dawn Williams (1972).

Cody Hrabe of Eager Beaver 4-H Club exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer. The Reserve Champion Market Steer was exhibited by Stetson Nyp of Palco 4-H Club.

Rebecca Benoit of Palco 4-H Club exhibited the Grand Champion Meat Goat. Nathaniel Billinger of Star 4-H Club exhibited the Reserve Champion Meat Goat.

Cody Hrabe of Eager Beaver 4-H exhibited the Grand Champion Market Lamb. Cody Hrabe also exhibited the Reserve Champion Market Lamb.

The Grand Champion Market Swine was exhibited by Haley Dix of Woodston Sunflower 4-H. The Reserve Champion Market Swine was exhibited by Jared Keas of Eager Beaver 4-H Club.

Owner Art Wilkens presented the final payment to the City of Stockton for the Wilkens Walking Trailer Manufacturing Company to the Stockton City Commissioners. The business had entered into the purchase contract for the City’s building 15 years earlier.

A picture of four generations of Earlene Wyant’s family was printed in the Sentinel and included grandson Terry Stroup, Jr., Earlene, grandson George Bunch, great-grandchildren Justyn, Catheryn and Bradley Stroup, daughter Susan Bunch, and great-granddaughter Jessica Rivera.

And So They Say: Kathy Dix: “We served around 1,200 people at the free barbecue Sunday evening of the Fair.” Margie Small: “I looked for our son, Jeff, on TV at the PGA Championship, but since there were 33,000 people there, I couldn’t find him!”

Looking Back 14 Years Ago (1995)—Doug Supernaw was the headliner for the Rooks County Free Fair. The performance was cut short due to a black thundercloud containing lightning, but Supernaw hung around after leaving the stage, posing for pictures and signing autographs. Governor Bill Graves made several appearances in Stockton on August 23rd, touring the Stockton Correctional Facility, attending a ribbon-cutting and tour of Wilkens Manufacturing, and spoke at the Stockton Chamber of Commerce luncheon at City Hall.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting The Year 1953—The curb and guttering had been completed on the south of Main Street with forms for curbs and guttering ready to be laid on the two blocks on North Oak. North Ash was to be graded and completed in the near future. At three o’clock on August 16th, in the Christian Church in Stockton, Miss Joan Maddy became the wife of Mr. Robert Balderston. The jewelry she wore was a pearl necklace and earrings, gifts from the bridegroom. The Rooks County Bakery had small angel food cakes on sale for 29¢ each and five bleached flour sacks for $1.00.

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago in 1911—J. C. Edwards has just placed nearly two hundred young hogs on the ranch northeast of Webster, which he recently purchased, to feed and fatten for late fall market. He also has a couple hundred cattle on pasture on the Saline River. There is a ten-dollar reward for the arrest and conviction of parties who are stealing wheels out of my buggy and shop yard. C. G.
