* And So They Say: Ted Brunson: “All I did on my vacation was mow the lawn and fish. And the fish came hard and expensive.” Jim Reidel: “Our baby antelope is doing fine now. We’ve got it on calf starter and when we take him out to the farm he follows the kids around like a little dog.” Bernice Brown: “They are advertising the Rooks County Free Fair on the billboards up around Holdrege.”

* Two Rooks County women did well at the Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament at the Fort Hays Country Club. Charlotte Desbien was one on the first flight winners, and Iva Lee McMillen received the award for the longest putt.

* When employees arrived at work at the Pla-More Café and Pool Hall on Friday, they found that the back door was unlocked, but thought little of it until it was discovered that money and cigarettes were missing. About $200.00 in bills and coins had been taken and in the neighborhood of 70 cartons of cigarettes of the better known brands. The investigation revealed no sign of any forcible entry and the doors were double locked, so the supposition was that the thief or thieves hid somewhere in the pool hall or café and were locked in at closing time.

* Two Stockton youngsters, Steve Eckhart and Shannon Krysl, were among the 23 boys and girls enrolled in an aerospace class in the Summer Laboratory School in Hays. Rock construction, airplane rides, the study of space travel, and developing aerospace demonstrations were part of the unique course—the first of its kind in the nation. One of the guest lecturers was Captain Ralph Moyer, Civil Air Patrol Liaison Offices from McConnell Air Force Base.

* The Summer Picnic committee had completed its plans for Stockton’s big mid-summer event. A tricycle race had been added to the bicycle races, and a watermelon- eating contest was also on the agenda. Sidewalk sales were another part of the event with the dig for dimes a big favorite.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: This is the season of the year when bugs and miller moths appear. Always something to annoy, and so few things we can enjoy.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Louis James had been admitted to the Kansas State Bar and joined the McCaslin Law Firm at Osborne. Part of the Record had been printed in red and the other part in blue, to make a red, white and blue edition for the Fourth of July.

* Mrs. Joan Santilli had taken her daughter Celeste to Kansas City for a checkup. Celeste had burned her mouth two years prior when she put a live electric plug in her mouth.

* The engagement of Miss Marlene Kriley to Ronald LaBarge had been announced. A late summer wedding was planned.

* The parents of Miss Arlinda Jean Desaire had announced her engagement to Mr. Ken McLaughlin. A September wedding was planned.

* Showing at the Park-Drive-In were the movies “Born Free” and “After The Fox” starring Peter Sellers.

* On sale at Oyer Food Market were a pound of seedless grapes for 39¢, sliced bacon for 69¢ a pound, a four-pound canned ham for $3.98, and Kitty Clover potato chips for 49¢ a bag.
