SPOTLIGHTING THE

YEAR…1963

* And So They Say: Pat Reed: “I’d like to know who it was who wished for a white Christmas.” Sarah Doughty: “When you’re broke, then you are ready for Christmas.” Everett Stewart: “If I wasn’t awfully hungry for turkey, I wouldn’t be out hunting for my car number in this cold weather.”

* Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hamilton were the parents of a son, Leon Robert, born on December 23rd.

* Shelly Hurley was carrying her left arm in a sling as a result of a fracture of one of the bones. The injury was incurred while she was playing basketball with some of the boys after the game with Plainville, and the injury may keep her out of this sort of sport for a few weeks.

* Ustel (Rusty) Bemis had a seriously injured left little finger which he sustained when he caught it in the end gate of a truck. The end of the finger was torn off, and the flesh of the remainder of the finger was badly mangled and the bone splintered.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: Nothing much to look forward to now for a while except to get the Christmas tree sheddings vacuumed up out of the carpet.

* As We See It: So in 1964, if you want a better community, you be the first to try to make it as such.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: The Christian Church had presented Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” with Clyde Reed cast as Scrooge. The VFW Auxiliary had packed and delivered 20 Christmas baskets. The Stockton Post Office reported an unusually big Christmas business with 52,182 pieces of mail cancelled between December 13th and 24th.

* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies “The Nutty Professor” starring Jerry Lewis, and “The Trouble With Harry” starring Edmund Gwenn and John Forsythe.

* Weekend Specials at Slansky IGA included sliced bacon for 55¢ a pound, ripe olives for 39¢ a can, six pounds of pure vegetable margarine for $1.00, ten pounds of potatoes for 39¢ a pound, and three tall cans of Hawaiian Punch for $1.00.

* The employees of the Rooks County Grain Company had been entertained at a turkey dinner and dancing party at the LeeRoy Doty home east of town. Employee families present were Mr. and Mrs. Duane Hunter, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Creevan and Diane, with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wenzl and Pat Glendening also present.

* Winners were awarded turkeys at Ostmeyer’s after finding vehicle license numbers posted in seven places of business around town. Twenty-four out of 40 turkeys were awarded, basically due to the bad weather that arrived on the same day as the scavenger hunt. Winners were: Virgil Olson, Eddie Buss, Wayne Sutton, Bob Atkisson, Douglas Morris, Lillian Stithem, Darrell Hrabe, Wilbur Robinson, Verl Maddy, Frank Tyson, Jack McEwen, Earl Cramer, Mr. Kraft, Harold Hulse, Gene Lytle, Robert Osborn, M. D. Krausharr, Art Copeland, Lyle Walker, Ralph Naylor, Duane Livingston, Harlan Gilbert, Stanley Krysl and Nina Crawford.
