Jean Lindsey marks 80 years of Rooks County Fair entries

Jean Lindsey joined Webster’s 4-W/4-H group (Webster’s Willing Winning Workers) in 1943. She turned eight during the Rooks County Free Fair that year, which was always held during her birthday week, August 21st. Turning eight meant she could enter and show items as part of her 4-H group, and so began the yearly tradition of fair entries from Jean.

Plainville Memorial Library is getting a facelift

The Plainville Memorial Library is getting an exterior facelift. It is extending its reach outside after officials noticed patrons were sitting in their vehicles during off hours to access the Library’s Wi-Fi. Thanks to approximately $60,000.00 in grants from Heartland Community Foundation, Dane G. Hansen Foundation, and Western Cooperative, the Library is revamping its exterior to make it more appealing for outdoor use.

Chief Judge Glenn Braun honored with distinguished service award

Glenn Braun, chief judge of the 23rd Judicial District for Rooks, Ellis, Trego and Gove counties, was recently recognized with the Distinguished Service Award by the Kansas Bar Association. The award recognizes an individual or continuous long-standing service on behalf of the legal profession or the public.

Farm and Ranch Transition Conferences to be held in 4 locations in Central Kansas

The Central Kansas, Phillips-Rooks, Post Rock, and River Valley Extension Districts will be hosting conferences this August aimed to help farmers and ranchers plan the transition of their farm. According to the 2016 Family Business Survey by the National Bureau of Economic Research Family Business Alliance, 43% of family-owned businesses don’t have a succession plan, yet 75% want the business to continue through family.
