Area harvest has begun

Jerry McReynolds and Marvin Jackson brought in the first loads of wheat to start this year’s area harvest. Shawn McReynolds drove into the Woodston Coop on Friday, June 23rd, for Jerry McReynolds, with Jackson pulling into the Stockton Farmers Union Elevator on Saturday, June 24th.

City approves fireworks for July 1st through July 4th

Since the Fourth of July falls on a Tuesday this year, the Stockton City Commission voted at their June 20th meeting to allow fireworks to be shot off in town starting Saturday, July 1st, through Tuesday, July 4th, from sunrise to midnight. (4 yes, Reesa Brown, Nathan Glendening, Jesica Kerr, and Adam Bryant; 1 no, Bob Becker). Commissioner Becker felt that the fireworks should be reserved for just the holiday. The commissioners will revisit when fireworks can be shot off in town each year.

Stockton Cheer Team rocks at camp!

The Stockton High School Cheer Team of Claire Plumer, Ava Dix, Bodye Stithem, Ella Snyder, Saj Snyder, Temprance Northup, Karleigh Horn, and Shae Yohon attended UCA Camp at Kansas Wesleyan from June 12th through June 15th with sponsor Bobbi Basart. As a team, they took third place in the Game Day Competition, in which they performed a sideline routine they just learned, along with a cheer, stunt, and the Stockton High School fight song.

SNB presents generous donation to SVM

By recently presenting Solomon Valley Manor Administrator Amanda Atkisson with a $218,000.00 donation, Solutions North Bank of Stockton takes another step forward in serving their hometown and looking toward the community’s future. The first step was SNB working in partnership with the City of Stockton and the Solomon Valley Manor to finance the construction of a new facility through a lease/ purchase agreement.

Former Stockton man loses life in one-vehicle accident

A Kansas man, who spent most of his teen years growing up in and around Stockton, died on Tuesday, June 13, following a one-vehicle accident in Cowley County. Charles Raymond Velz of Winfield, 50, was eastbound on U160 at milepost 316, at 9:25 a.m., when the 2023 Western Star Cement Mixer truck he was driving left the roadway, struck a culvert, and partially overturned in the south ditch.

Flag presentation held at SVM

It was more than fitting that four Stockton VFW Post 8873 veterans held a United States Flag presentation for the residents at Solomon Valley Manor on Flag Day, Wednesday, June 14th. Army veterans John Berkley, Scott Baker, Ed Thayer, and Navy veteran Tim Johnston were on hand during the evening presentation with Baker starting the program by reading about the history and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance before they led the residents in the reciting of the Pledge.

Matt Whitney meets with county commissioners

Matt Whitney met with the Rooks County Commission on Tuesday, June 13th, to talk about concerns and ask questions of the commissioners. Whitney asked about the mil levy, and if the County would be going revenue neutral to which commissioner John Ruder replied that the Commission is waiting on the county valuations, and then they will meet with the accountant in July to look at the numbers for the upcoming 2024 budget.
