Body found on dried-out portion of the Kansas lakebed identified

HARVEY COUNTY—The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office has identified a man whose body was found in a local park on Sunday, September 17th. According to a news release, 31-year-old Tyler Lee Ford was found dead in the Sunset Ridge area of East Park on the lake’s southwest side. Ford was from Hutchinson. Deputies responded to the scene at around 12:45 p.m. on Sunday after a passerby found Ford’s body in a dried-out section of the lake bed. His death is being investigated as a homicide. “Ford is believed to have died within the past week, and the body was placed in the park within the past week,” the sheriff’s office stated. “An autopsy by the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center determined Ford died of a gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.Anyone with information can call the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office. (KAKE)

Kansas mother sentenced after toddler shot her in the foot

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas woman, shot in the foot by her two-year-old, was sentenced in Sedgwick County. According to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, 22-year-old Kianna Jweji was sentenced to 12 months probation. She pleaded guilty in July to aggravated endangerment of a child and possession of marijuana. On January 12th, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 1200 block of North Lorraine in Wichita, according to Officer Chad Ditch. While officers were en route to the scene, a suspect, later identified as Newji’s 25-year-old boyfriend Marlon M. Jones, fled on foot to a residence in the 3000 block of East 11th Street. As officers arrived, they saw Jones walking back from the area of that residence. Officers then located Nweji inside her home on North Lorraine with a gunshot wound to her foot. EMS transported her to a local hospital for treatment. The investigation revealed that Nweji and Jones were lying in bed when their two-year-old child found a gun and accidentally shot Nweji. Jones took the gun to the 11th Street address where an acquaintance of his lives according to Ditch. Investigators located the gun and found an AR-15 that belonged to nobody in the residence, and the individuals in the house did not know how it got there. (Salina Post)

Landspout seen near Liebenthal in isolated storms

RUSH COUNTY—Some residents in Rush County got a good look at alandspout early Tuesday evening, September 19th, as some severe storms popped up in the region. According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the brief landspout was located northwest of Liebenthal after 6:00 p.m. A second land spout was near Nekoma at about 6:00 p.m.Tuesday’s isolated storms included heavy rainfall, with nearly 1.5 inches falling near Otis. Quarter-size hail and heavy rain fell in Pawnee County. (Hays Post)

School, hospital locked down during search for NW Kansas theft suspect

SHERIDAN COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect concerning an incident that forced a school and hospital into lockdown. Just before 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 20th, Sheridan County Sheriff’s deputies and Hoxie Police responded to a report of theft and criminal trespass in the 1800 Block of SheridanAvenue in Hoxie, according to a media release. Through their investigation, an officer identified a suspect as 30-year-old Olajawun Scott. Just after 7:00 a.m., an officer contacted him at the corner of 16th and Sheridan. After locating stolen items among the suspect’s belongings, an officer attempted to place Scott in handcuffs. He resisted and fled from the officers. Despite a thorough search, officers were unable to locate him.

As a precaution, the Sheridan County Health complex and USD 412 schools were on lockdown.

Just after 10:30 a.m., officers contacted the suspect by phone, and he surrendered without further incident. Scott was booked into the Thomas County Jail while formal charges are requested with the Sheridan County Attorney for theft and interference with law enforcement. (Hays Post)

Garden City urging residents to be vigilant following car thefts

GARDEN CITY—Police in Garden City are asking residents to take steps to avoid being a victim after reports of several cars stolen over the September 15th weekend. Police say to make sure your vehicle is locked, and the windows and sunroofs closed, if it is going to be left unattended. Take anything of value with you, but if you cannot, ensure the valuables are hidden out of sight or locked in your trunk. Never leave your vehicle running unattended or keys inside it, even if it is locked. Garden City Police ask if anyone has information about the weekend incidents to call 620-276-1300.
