Suspect found dead following standoff near Glen Elder

MITCHELL COUNTY — On Saturday, Oct. 23, the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from a 78-year-old male who reported that he was forcibly taken at gunpoint and held for around 26 hours by his 59-year-old acquaintance, John Roudybush, of Glen Elder. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation had been called in to assist, and their High Risk Warrant Team attempted to execute an arrest warrant and search warrant at an address in rural Glen Elder. Roudybush refused to come out of the house and a standoff began. During the standoff, negotiators attempted to communicate with Roudybush for many hours.At two different times, shots were fired inside the house. Late Monday morning, officers breached an external wall of the house and were able to locate Roudybush who was deceased in an upstairs room. He died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. No shots were fired by any law enforcement officer during this incident. (Kansas.gov)

Rural accident claims life of Smith Center man

SMITH CENTER — On Friday, Oct. 22, emergency personnel responded to a one vehicle accident on East Limestone Road. Brian Martin, 39, Smith Center, was driving a 2008 Nissan car when he swerved to miss a deer and lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle went airborne and rolled. A passenger in the vehicle, 42-year-old Lucas Martin, of Phillipsburg, was ejected.

Brian was able to call 911 but was unable to give an exact location. Prior to emergency personnel locating the crash, Brian succumbed to his injuries, and Lucas, disoriented from his injuries, wandered from the scene. Deputies, firefighters and EMS personnel conducted a ground search for Lucas. A drone was deployed by the Phillips County Sheriff’s Department, and KHP aircraft provided assistance. Lucas was located by a family member and transported to Phillips County Hospital via ambulance. (The Advocate of Phillips County)

Death investigation in Hoisington

HOISINGTON — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Hoisington Police Department are investigating a shooting death that occurred last Wednesday morning in Hoisington.

That morning, around 3:10 a.m., the Hoisington Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting at an address in that city. When officers arrived they located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was later identified as ChaseAnderson, 22, of Hoisington. EMS arrived and attempted life-saving measures; however a short time later Anderson was pronounced dead. An acquaintance, 32-year-old Adam Sullivan, also of Hoisington, was in the residence at the time of the shooting. Preliminary information revealed thatAnderson was shot in the chest with a handgun. Later that morning, Sullivan was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia and was booked into the Barton County Jail. Life in prison: Man burned woman to death, injured officers

COLUMBUS — A 53-year-old man who fatally burned his neighbor and injured two police officers has been sentenced to life in prison. Harvey Raymond Ortberg, of Baxter Springs, was sentenced last week. He pleaded guilty in July to first-degree murder in the 2017 death of 65-year-old Sharon Horn. He also was sentenced to nine years and four months for injuring two officers. Prosecutors said Ortberg attacked Horn in her Baxter Springs home. When officers arrived, Ortberg doused himself, the woman and the officers with gasoline and set a fire. Hamilton suffered severe burns and was in a burn unit at a Springfield, Missouri, hospital for months before being released. (HaysPost.com)

Kansas man awaits sentencing for the murder of his mother

TOPEKA — A Kansas man is awaiting sentencing for the murder of his mother. Last week, 46-year-old David E. Wood, Jr. of Topeka entered a guilty plea to second degree intentional murder for the 2019 beating death of 69-year-old Kyong “Carol” Wood, of Topeka, according to the Shawnee County District Attorney’s office. On June 16, 2019, law enforcement was dispatched to a Topeka residence. Officers briefly entered the residence due to the nature of the call and they immediately located Kyong Wood, already deceased, just inside the residence. Believing the suspect to still be in the residence, law enforcement backed out and set up a perimeter. After a nearly 5-hour standoff, law enforcement utilized tear gas and, at that time, David E. Wood, Jr. exited the residence and was taken into custody and charged with the murder. Wood faces a minimum of 44-years in prison, according to a statement from the DA’s office.
