Small plane forced to land in western Kansas field

LANE COUNTY—At 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 30th, sheriff's deputies and Fire and EMS were dispatched to an aircraft emergency in the area of 96 Highway and Jagger Road west of Dighton, according to a social media report from the Lane County Sheriff's Office. First responders determined that a twin-engine Piper aircraft had lost both engines and was forced to land in a field. The pilot and two passengers were uninjured, and the plane did not appear to have significant damage. The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB are in charge of the investigation. (Hays Post)

Kansas veterinarian reports a person bit by cat with rabies

RENO COUNTY—Recently, Ninnescah Veterinary Service LLC, in Hutchinson, shared on social media that they had diagnosed a positive case of rabies in a farm cat. They had a client pick up a farm cat and was severely bitten on the arm.The farm cat was brought into the clinic and euthanized for testing. The veterinarian informed the client to go to the emergency room, start rabies vaccinations immediately, and not wait for the test to come back from the lab.The cat's owner complied with the recommendation and received her rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin.

Two days later, the lab sent the results that the cat was indeed positive for rabies. Rabies is a deadly disease, so please get your pets vaccinated as it could be a matter of life and death, for not only your pet, but for people as well. (Hays Post)

Great Bend family still suffering aftermath of fatal Christmas Eve crash

GREAT BEND—Twenty-three-year-old Skyler Warren was killed in a Christmas Eve crash. His girlfriend, Shelia Stiers, has been in Wichita since the accident, taking care of her two daughters, who were seriously injured in the accident. On December 24th, just after 9:00 p.m., Warren's Mazda four-door struck a GMC Yukon head-on four miles east of Sterling. Katrina Wood, 16, suffered three fractures in her spine, a broken femur, broken ribs, a punctured lung, and head injuries. Emma Wood, 11, also suffered a broken femur, a broken wrist, and a broken arm that severed her radial nerves. The family is asking for assistance as the girls prepare to return home. Kansas man sentenced to life in prison for murder of his mother

WICHITA—A man from Goddard has been sentenced to life in prison for thefirst-degree murder of his mother. On October 6th, 2021, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a welfare check in the 15300 Bock of West U. S. 54. After receiving no answer at the door or by phone, and checking local hospitals, deputies forced entry into the home and found 67-year-old Denyce Briet dead on the floor. Her son, Kyle Romey, was arrested later that day in Wichita.A jury found Romey guilty and sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 653 months. (KAKE)

Deputies make arrest in burglary at Kansas lumberyard

COFFEY COUNTY—On Monday, January 1st, the Coffey County Sheriff's Office reported their work with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and Osage County Sheriff's Office helped them to identify possible suspects involved in the December 26th burglary at Waverly Lumber in Waverly, Kansas. Over 90% of the property has been recovered, including vehicles and trailers, power equipment, tools, and accessories. Deputies had reported two work trucks, a trailer, various tools, electric wiring, and custom doors had been stolen from the business. The Coffey County Sheriff's Office Deputies and investigators continue to develop leads on this investigation to apprehend and hold all involved responsible. Names of suspects will not be released until the conclusion of the investigation, as officers seek more information to provide the best prosecution possible. (Hays Post)

Kansas sheriff's office K9 leads deputies to 20 pounds of meth

MEADE—A southwest Kansas sheriff's office is praising a K9 who led deputies to discover 20 pounds of meth in a pickup truck. The incident happened Tuesday afternoon, January 2nd, outside the Meade County Courthouse in the 200 Block of North Fowler in Meade. Sheriff Douglas Ritter said in a release that a 43-year-old man parked his pickup legally while he was appearing in court on an unrelated case. The sheriff's office deployed K9 Zero to conduct a 'free air sniff' on the vehicle. Zero indicated the presence of illegal narcotics inside the pickup. When a search warrant was executed on the vehicle, approximately 20 pounds of methamphetamine were found. (KAKE)
