Charles “Charlie” Raymond Velz, 50, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, after sustaining fatal injuries following a rollover accident.

He was born November 9, 1972 in Plainville, Kansas to George and Lyndal (Hance) Velz. His father died when Charles was a young boy and he spent much of his teen years with his grandparents, Raymond and Christine Hance of rural Stockton. He was a 1992 graduate of Stockton High School.

Charles was a self-taught mechanic from a very young age and could fix almost anything he put his hands on. He had helped fix cars for many, many people throughout his life. His ability to fix not only cars, but to build, restore, paint, take things apart and put them back together was like no other. His mind was always trying to figure something out. Charles never quit working, whether in the shop, at home, or at Daniels, and his work ethic was something he was proud of and known for. In the rare moments he wasn’t working he enjoyed time with his family, fishing, camping, four-wheeling, and playing with his dogs. He especially loved naps with Lainey.

Charles married Tina Parks at a young age, and to this union, three sons were born: Shawn, Skyler, and Shane Velz. The couple later divorced.

In December 2000, Charles met the love of his life, Leah Parsons. The two shared nearly 23 wonderful years together. Charles and Leah were married on October 22, 2011. After nearly 10 years of trying to conceive, the two welcomed their daughter Lainey in 2022. She was the pride and joy of her daddy’s eye. Charles smiled more in the last 14 months since her birth than he ever had. Charles and Leah had a great life together and he will be missed immensely. Charles will be remembered as a man of many talents, a wonderful husband, and the best father, son, brother and uncle.

Charles leaves behind his wife Leah and daughter Lainey of the home; sons Shawn, Skyler, and Shane Velz of Wichita; his mother Lyndal Fetterolf of Pawnee Rock; brother John Gray of Blackwell, Okla.; sister Heather Fetterolf of Pawnee Rock; his in-laws, Mike and Jolynn Parsons of Burden and Marcia and Kevin Duggins of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; his two sisters-in-law, Megan Belisle and her family, and Jessilyn Parsons; and his brother-in-law Tyler Duggins; several nieces, nephews, friends, and his Daniels Ready Mix family.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 19, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at Ark City First Assembly of God Church. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.  A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.  The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 that afternoon.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Charles Velz Memorial Fund for the benefit of his daughter Lainey. Contributions may be made through the funeral home and may be sent to: Miles Funeral Service, 4001 East 9th Street, Winfield, KS 67156.
