World War II Veterans from north central Kansas were honored at the WWII memorial in Washington, D.C. on September 10, 2008. U.S. Representative Jerry Moran posed for group and individual pictures and spent the day with the heroes. Moran’s father was one of the members on this Honor Flight.

The Stockton Recreation Commission was hosting an Open House for its new Recreation Fitness Center, located at 506 Main, in Stockton. Attendees were able to sign up for membership.

Dr. Cynthia Sherbondy, DMD, had taken over Dr. Morris Talbert’s dental practice. Even though the name was new, Stockton Dental Center, clients should see the same friendly faces and great service they were accustomed to. James Adams was the new county executive director for Farm Services in Stockton, beginning his duties on Sept. 2nd.

After an eight-game losing streak dating back to September 8 of the previous year, the Stockton Tigers got to taste victory once again and they did it in exciting fashion with a come-from-behind, overtime victory over the Northern Valley Huskies.

Present for the dedication of the new football scoreboard from Nex-Tech on Sept. 5th, were Scott Sproul (Nex-Tech), Greg Beougher (SHS school board member), Pat Lingg (SHS school board president), Jana Conger (KAYS director of school service), Bob Becker (SHS High School Principal), Luis Cass (District Superintendent), Todd Berry (Stockton Grade School Principal), Mark Lowry (SHS school board member), and Nex-Tech CEO Jeff Wick and his two children.

The Lady Tigers fell to Osborne and Palco at the Palco Triangular on Sept. 9, 2008. The Lady Tigers went three games with each team, but ended up on the losing end.

Jesica Miller and Dan Kerr announced engagement and approaching marriage on Oct. 11, 2008.

Philisene Probasco celebrated her 90th birthday on September 28, 2008. Friends and relatives were invited to mark the occasion by “showering” her with cards.

And So They Say — Daryl Thornburg: “After our high school football game Friday night, I was so hoarse I couldn’t talk.”

Obituaries were published for Inez Strutt Lorson (1926); and Pat Gregory (1924).

Showing at the Nova Theatre was “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.”

Looking Back 14 Years Ago (1994) — “A Knight to Remember” was the Homecoming theme. Seniors crowned king and queen were Joe Gasper and Tara Hahn. On the gridiron, the Tigers beat Victoria 36-6. Fay Thomsen was the proprietor of Country Connections Gifts & More, in the former Chesney’s Turn Around at 1203 E. Main. A new program was implemented to provide volunteer crossing guards for the Stockton students. The SHS volleyball team was sporting a 9-2 record. The Antique Show was that weekend at the Fairgrounds, which also included the finals of the Farmer Olympics.

56 Years Ago (1952) — Janice Smith and Mike Lackey were two Stockton youngsters who were nursing their wounds after an encounter with a ground squirrel. Funeral services were held at the Smith Memorial Chapel for Marvin Sammons, 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Sammons, who was fatally injured in a freak tractor accident at the farm home, twenty miles north and west of Stockton.

98 Years Ago (1910) — In the automobile race on Friday an accident happened to the Buick machine driven by Frank Slason. Before reaching the northwest curve of the track, and while going at high speed, he discovered that his steering gear was out of order and would not answer the wheel and make the turn. The machine struck the bank and made a complete somersault. Slason fell out and was rolled in the dust, but was clear of the machine and received no injury. The crowd rushed over to that side of the grounds and in a few moments the machine was righted and Slason drove it back to the grandstand. Never in the history of automobile racing has such an accident occurred without smashing both the driver and his car. Autoracing on the race track is an exceedingly dangerous sport, and it is a wonder that nobody has been killed so far. We cannot expect to be always so fortunate.
