Two bluegrass bands entertained a large crowd at the Nova Theatre on April 8, 2006. The Prairie Acre Bluegrass Band, featuring members Noah Musser, Tricia Spencer, Greg Yother and Virginia Musser, and Steam Powered Airplane, featuring Cody Walters, Stockton native Uriah Price, Jon DeGroot and Tucker Smith, played to a very appreciative crowd.

The City’s grand total of the 1% city sales tax receipts collected for the purpose of maintenance and operation of the water treatment plant was $964,140.15. To date, the City had collected $11,476.54 for the 2006 year. The sales tax was implemented in 1999 and would run until Jan. 31, 2018.

City commissioners allocated $85,000 from the Olive Reed Schafer fund towards construction of two double tennis courts. The total cost for the tennis courts, fencing and electrical hookups was quoted at $112,636. Through grants and other donations, about $32,000 had already been collected.

Epsilon Sigma Alpha was sponsoring an Easter Egg Hunt on April 15, 2006 at Solomon Valley Manor for ages 1-4, and at the Lower City Park for ages 5-10. That same day, Sigma Phi ESA was sponsoring a free movie, “Dreamer,” at the Nova Theatre.

Stockton 4th graders who participated in Jump Rope for Heart included Kacey Campbell, John Merritt, Joseph Slate, Colton Hull, Korban Palmer, Hannah Smith, MaKayla Reed, Janassa Swaney, Peyton Broeker, Caitlyn Lingg, Nicholas Henry, Austin Smith, Miranda Wildeman, Carlie Spires and Paige Pedigo.

Showing at the Nova Theatre was “She’s The Man,” starring Amanda Bynes.

And So They Say — Willard Atwill: “I’ve just driven 7,120 miles on a five-week trip and never paid more for gas than I did right here in Stockton.”

Raffle winners at the Solomon Valley Pheasants Forever Banquet held at the St. Thomas Parish Center on April 8 were Bryce Reichard, Colten Newell, Ryan Sike, Harvey Fry, Cheryl Landry, Jim Stice and Jared Stice.

Country Stars, Log Cabin, Nine Patch, table runners and Block of the Month were some of the patterns and projects sewn during a quilt class taught by Janie Lowry at her home quilt shop. Those attending from Stockton were Elaine Korb, Beulah Waters, Diane Maddy, Pat Cook, Joan Northup, Mary Conn, Idona Duncan, Donna Griebel, and Joyce Schmitz; from Plainville: Ann Ochampaugh, Stephanie Sutter and Marsha Smith; from Logan, Deb Hopp; and from Lucas, LeeAnn Herold.

Beulah Mae Kellogg had passed away.

Looking Back 14 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year...1992 —The local Sears catalog store, operated by Robert and Elenore LeFort, was being phased out and closing. Rooks County Hospice was formed. Six people from Norway were sightseeing in the area as part of a Rotary exchange program. (From ASTS) Bob Riffel: “I believe the Stockton Police Department needs to hire more Andy Taylors to look after all their Barney Fifes.” New officers of the Stockton Lions Club were: President, Darrell Small; Vice Presidents, Don Hamit, Bob Brungardt and Roque Garcia; Secretary, Kevin Allen; and Treasurer, Dennis Bedore.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1950 — Due to the influx of break-ins, robberies and stolen cars in the vicinity, the Stockton Police Department issued a warning for residents and business owners to not leave large amounts of money in their cash registers, to leave a light on inside businesses at night, double-check all locks before leaving, not leave keys in vehicles, and not leave valuables in unlocked cars.

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1908 — Someone had been breaking into the high school building frequently, injuring the basement doors and other entrances. An example will be made of the miscreant when he is caught making depredations of this sort.
