Stockton Interim City Manager Keith Schlaegel started in his position on February 12th. He was the Heartland Building Center Manager for many years. His responsibilities included the day-today operations of the City, personnel management, public relations, long and short-term planning, and preparation of the budget and management of the City’s finances. His wife, Mendy (Baughman), was the owner and operator of Prairie Classics.

Dan Newman started serving as USD No. 271 Interim Superintendent on Tuesday, February 17th, replacing Luis Cass, who had resigned on February 12th for health reasons.

During the City of Stockton Commission meeting, the commissioners discussed the proposal of sales tax added for the Solomon Valley Manor on the April ballot. Commissioner Mike Heenan felt that the half-cent sales tax would be well worth it for the facility’s future. Heenan said he had talked with city attorney Ed Hageman about how the City would word it on the ballot.

The Stockton Tigers had captured a 71-63 win over the Smith Center Redmen in the Mid-Continent League boys’ basketball game.

Three Stockton wrestlers were to represent the town at the 3-2-1A State Wrestling Tournament as brothers Diego and Carlos Gallaway, and Jeremy Hrabe had finished in the top four at the Beloit Regionals. Junior Carlos Gallaway was the Tigers’ top medalist, placing second. Sophomore Diego Gallaway and senior Jeremy Hrabe placed fourth in their respective weight categories.

Bringing home the gold at the WaKeeney tournament were Stockton Wrestling Club members Kamden Winters and Angelo Ruiz.

Birth Announcements included: Kellan Kekoa Ceridon, son of Alexis and Samuel Juan Ceridon, was born on February 8th; two-year-old Zachary Ryan announced the birth of his brother, Isaac Randall Thayer, born on September 23rd to parents Lewis and Kathleen Thayer of Cherryvale; and Lily Ann Gerstenkorn was born on February 3rd to parents Jerry and Dawn Gerstenkorn of Arlington, Texas. Grandparents are Don and Linda McLaughlin of Stockton and Ken and Vickie Gerstenkorn of Haslet, Texas.

Jerry and Carla Fellhoelter of Plainville had announced the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Stephanie, to Jasen Hoffman, son of Marvin and Sherri Hoffman, Topeka, and Mike and Stephanie Cooter, Jonesboro, Tenn. An April 3rd wedding was planned in Key West, Florida.

Obituaries were published for Flora Kathryn Unruh (1927); Dale M. Rempe (1926); Jerry L. Nedrow (1932); Joyce C. Dix (1940); Jill St. Clair (1967); Bertha B. Knipp (1924); Rose Marie Pywell (1933); and Jimmy Dean DeBey (1946).

Looking Back 14 Years Ago (1995) — The primary election narrowed the field for school board candidates to Thomas Bigge, Robert Reed, Roger Roy, Roy Slansky, Eldon Kriley, Terry Carsten, Steve Riffel, and Betty Bedore. Clarene Goodheart was honored with a retirement reception after 21 years with the Rooks County Extension Service. The opening statementsintheKimOrdway trial were scheduled with Ordway expected to plead not guilty by reason of insanity to two counts of first-degree murder for the November 1993 killing of his parents, Clarene and Betty Ordway of rural Stockton.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting The Year 1953 — The Comfort Cabins & Stations, Forrest and Veda Van Horn owners, had re-opened for business after being closed for several weeks for repair and redecorating after a fire. New dry cleaning prices went into effect at Wanamaker Cleaners. Ester Wells, daughter of one of Rooks County’s pioneer families, had passed away. Mrs. Hattie Barnes, a resident of Stockton since 1903 passed away on February 18th.

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago in 1911 — Wm. Glasco’s son, John, got a five-inch gash cut on the back of his head, besides two smaller ones on his forehead, by having a hayrack fall on him. The secretary of the fair association was corresponding with an aviator and trying to arrange to have a flying machine at the fair. Last Saturday evening, when returning home from Stockton, J. E. Watts’ team in meeting an automobile became frightened and started to run away. Mr. Watts succeeded in controlling them, and a broken surrey tone was all the damage done.
