A handwritten bomb threat forced the evacuation of students, staff and adinistrators in the elementary and high schools here in Stockton on Thursday, May 11. The note was found in a girls’ restroom in the grade school. The 354 students in the elementary and high schools were safely evacuated from the premises and taken to City Hall. Residents of homes adjacent to the school also were evacuated. Because of its proximity to the school, U.S. Highway 24 was closed from the overpass at Webster Reservoir to U.S. Highway 183. Bomb sniffing dogs from Salina were brought in, but no bomb was found. The all-clear was issued, and the highway reopened by 6 p.m. Law enforcement officials were investigating the incident, the second at the school district this school year.

Thirty seniors in the Class of 2006 were set to graduate from Stockton High School on Saturday, May 20.

Commencement exercises for the 41 members of the eighth-grade class at Stockton Grade School were scheduled for Tuesday, May 23.

Carol Van Dyke, owner of Gifts & More LLC in Plainville, had purchased The Dandelion Patch in Stockton from Cheryl Hrabe. Van Dyke took over ownership on April 24, 2006.

A total of 53 kids, ranging in age from 4-14, and eight adults, attended the 6th annual OK Kids Day at Webster State Park on May 6th.

Heath Muir and Grant Kollman qualified for the State Golf Tournament as Muir finished in eighth place with an 82 (41-41), and Kollman was 16th with an 87 (40-47) at the 2-A Regional Golf Tournament held in WaKeeney.

U.S.D. 271 Board of Education announced that the school district would offer all-day Kindergarten beginning the 2006-2007 school year.

Two great “Tribute” artists were scheduled to perform at the Nova Theatre on May 28, featuring the music of country superstars Garth Brooks, Neil Diamond, Faith Hill and Trisha Yearwood.

Showing at the Nova Theatre was “Over The Hedge.”

Obituaries were published for James O. “Jim” Grimes (1927-2006); Moyne Yoxal (1912-2006); Gladys M. Lagroon (1922-2006); Chester L. LeSage (1918-2006); Kenneth Everett Bartholomew (1916-2006); Michael Lee Wiese (1991-2006); Gerald Arthur Simoneau (1921- 2006); and Orville M. Clark (1923-2006).

Looking Back 14 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1992 — The community was losing two of its finest professional people, as Dr. Harold Mauck and Dr. William Votapka retired from medical practice after 31 years. Dr. Mark Kelly of Plainville agreed to see patients here. A farewell dinner was given for Rev. Lyle and Jeannie Miller, prior to their move to Rose Valley.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1950 — The baseball tournament scheduled to be held at the Stockton Fairgrounds for May 23, 24 and 25 included the teams from Stockton, Hill City, Logan, Plainville, Osborne and Damar.
