* Coach John Locke and his high school basketball squad were heading to Emporia for the State Basketball Tournament for the second year in a row.

* A deal was competed whereby Stockton Lanes was sold by Adolph and Lucille Laska to Marc and Loa Boxberger of Russell. Mr. and Mrs. Boxberger were both expert bowlers with Loa having finished near the top in a number of national tournaments. They had visited the local bowling alley on several occasions and had many friends in the Stockton area. The Laskas had not yet announced their future plans, and neither had the Boxbergers about the management of the Lanes.

* Fifteen-year-old Alan Bellerive, son of Mr. and Mrs. Florent Bellerive of Bogue, had drowned in the farm pond. Alan and a friend, Gaylen Gosselin, had been playing on a raft when it turned over. Alan couldn’t swim. Gaylen tried to rescue him, but was unable to do so.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: Quite often the “life of the party” turns out to be quite a boor at home.

* Looking Back Fourteen Years Ago: A snack bar was under construction at the Nova Theatre. George Martin had a narrow escape at his home when he was overcome by gas fumes.

* Eighteen students from the seventh and eighth grades in Stockton were to take part in the All-Kansas Scholarship Contest. The event was sponsored by Emporia State College. Each school could send up to three students in each subject. The students from Stockton were Becky Waller, Steve Eckart, Sara Jo Marshall (English 7); John Hageman, Barry Hamilton, Cindy Votapka (Math 8); Steve Eckart, David Hrabe, John Hageman (Science 7); Steve Eckart, John Hageman, Cindy Votapka (Kansas History); Becky Waller, Sara Jo Marshall, Cindy Turnbull (Spelling 7); Elva Hahn, Delores Schindler, Luann Chamberlain (English 8); Larry Riffel, Delores Schindler, Elva Hahn (Math 8); Larry Riffel, Elva Hahn, Robin Roland (Science 8); Delores Schindler, Charles Look, Greg Mahoney (Citizenship); Larry Riffel, Charles Look, Greg Mahoney (History); Carolyn Pomeroy, Judy Towns and Luann Chamberlain (Spelling 8).

* Four basketball teams had been formed from boys in the fourth through sixth grades with boys from the seventh and eighth grades as coaches. A tournament was held with the Scott team winning the tournament. The teams consisted of (Steve Scott team) Marlin Locke, Tommy Smith, Butch Marshall, Kent Kincaid, Steve Paul, Ronald Riedel, Mickey Strutt, Dwight Schneider; (Charles Look team) Blaine Hageman, Allen Hahn, Dennis Yoxall, Brad Muir, Charles Robinson, J. D. Niermeier, Verl Muir, Shawn McCall, Brad Hrabe, Glen Hays, Mark Kreller; (LeRoy Cabbage team) Terry McRae, Steve Yoxall, Boyd Rooker, Randy Smith, Doug Maddox, Chet Look, Wendell Peacock; and (John Hageman team) Brad Glendening Terry Carsten, Timmy Votapka, Bobby Bagby, Doug Stewart, Gary Schilowsky, and Harley Miller.

* On sale at Glenn’s Mr. AG were ten pounds of Russell potatoes for 59¢, a box of saltine crackers for 35¢, and pork steak for 53¢ a pound.

* Showing at the Nova Theatre was the movie “3 On A Couch” starring Jerry Lewis and Janet Leigh.
