* The first baby born in Rooks County in 1968 was really a New Year’s baby as she waited only seven minutes after the New Year was ushered in to make her appearance. Little Miss Michele Lea was born to parents Mr. and Mrs. Bob Gilbert and weighed six pounds and six ounces.

* The Sutor Herford Farms of Zurich had entered registered Herefords in the carload bull show at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. This was the largest bull show of its kind in the world, with a total of 783 head showing in 61 carloads.

* Dr. and Mrs. Richard Vanderlip of Manhattan were the parents of a daughter, Debra Beth, born on December 22nd, 1967.

* The engagement of Aneta Jean Noble to Mr. Randall C. Nichols of Alton was announced. No wedding date had been set.

* Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Bubloz of Green Bay, Wisconsin, had announced the engagement of their daughter, Barbara, to Charles Hamit, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Hamit of Phillipsburg.

* Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Johnston of Stockon had announced the engagement of their daughter, Linda Mae, to Mr. David Benson. The wedding was planned for February 25th.

* A party was held at the home of Mrs. Lila Hulse for her granddaughter, Verna Johnson’s eleventh birthday. Those helping her enjoy the afternoon were Tammy Roskilly, Lila, Sharon, Jesse, and Tammy Hulse, Marty and Kenny Byfield, Elda Pulec, Julia Wyant, Leesa Pulec, and LaDonna Strunk.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago (1954): The farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Krob had been destroyed by a fire along with the contents. The 1953 Toni Twins, Janice and Janine Sutton, celebrated their first birthday. Vryl Switzer had scored two touchdowns in the East/ West Shrine game. There were numerous reports of a mountain lion being on the loose.

* Celebrating their golden wedding anniversary with an Open House were Mr. and Mrs. Asa Norris of rural Alton.

* On sale at Glenn’s Mr. AG were two pounds of hamburger for $1.09, beef roasts for 47¢ a pound, Nabisco spoonsize Shredded Wheat for 45¢ a box, six cans of frozen Shurfine orange juice for 99¢ a can, and twenty Sunkist oranges for 89¢.

* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies “Hillbillies in a Haunted House” and “One Spy Too Many” starring Robert Vaughn, David McCallum, and Rip Torn.
