* And So They Say: Chuck Waller: “It was almost unbelievable that the air conditioners had almost a week’s rest.” Dode Morrissey: “A fine vacation I get! I’m spending it in the store while my wife takes a vacation.” Homer McCauley: “I’m just living for the day that it rains.” Robert Osborn: “When the fine new school stadium is finished, they can have commencement exercises there instead of sweating it out in the auditorium.” Stella Willis: “I never saw such marvelous corn as I saw in Nebraska over the weekend.”

* Foreign exchange student Johanna Venekamp of Amsterdam, Holland had arrived in Stockton with her American parents, Mr. and Mrs. John B. Smith with whom she was to make her home during the 1964-1965 school year. The Smiths were delighted with their 17-year-old “daughter” and reported that she spoke excellent English.

* Mr. and Mrs. Gale Hutton were the parents of a daughter, Michelle Sue, born on August 18th. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Angelovic were the parents of a daughter, Michelle Lynn, born on August 13th. Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Reed were the parents of a daughter, Denise Marie, born on August 6th.

* Harold Schultz had won the 500 Rock Marathon at Phillipsburg with 497 out of the 500, which is pretty good shooting in anybody’s book. He broke 433 without missing, and had he been able to break two more rocks, he would have tied the world’s record of 499. The Van Eaton boys also did well with Bobby taking the sub-junior handicap and Quentin winning the sub-junior 16-yard singles.

* Virginia Lorbeer, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Johnny) Lorbeer and a graduate of Stockton High School, was to appear on the popular CBS television program, “Password.”

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: You may not feel yourself a very good housekeeper, but when you empty the bag of your vacuum cleaner, you will discover that your house could have been even dirtier than it is.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Forrest Van Horn had purchased the Comfort Cabins and Phillips 66 Station. Jimmy, the three-yearold son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Boyd, had received numerous bruises and skin burns as the result of falling from a moving car. A deer and a mountain lion had been reported as being seen in the area.

* On sale at Boyd & Conn Supermarket were three pounds of green apples for 35¢, ten pounds of white potatoes for 39¢, a dozen Grade A eggs for 39¢, pork steak for 49¢ a pound and two bags of Kraft jet puff marshmallows for 45¢.

* Mr. and Mrs. Howard Webster and Howdie had returned home after a week-long trip to Puerto Rico, which they made with their daughter and sister Kristeen of Chicago. They enjoyed their visit to the island very much and saw many interesting things, but didn’t care too much for the dampness and humidity. They had a little trouble flying back as they were “toss” flying, which meant they were traveling at reduced rates and airplane availability due to Kristeen being an airline stewardess.

* Showing at the Park Drive-In Theatre were the movies, “Children of the Damned,” and “The Prize,” starring Paul Newman, Edward G. Robinson and Elke Sommer.
