Pro Football Hall Of Famer To Take Part In Shrine Bowl In Hays

HAYS—The final touches of this year’s Kansas Shrine Bowl are being implemented for the all-star football game in Hays on July 15th, including the appearance of Pro Football Hall of Famer, Barry Sanders. Sanders is an NFL Hall of Fame running back and a Kansas native who will be inducted into the Kansas Shrine Bowl Fall of Fame. Sanders, a Wichita North graduate, played for the West team in the 1986 game. He then went to Oklahoma State, where he won the Heisman Trophy and was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1989. After a ten-year NFL career, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004. (Hays Post)

Eilert Named Interim Head Men’s Basketball Coach At WVU

MORGANTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA—Josh Eilert, a native of Osborne, Kansas, was named head men’s basketball coach at West Virginia University for an interim period as announced by Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker. Eilert played two basketball seasons at Kansas State from 2002-004 after transferring from Cloud County Community College, where he was a two-year letterman and a one-year starter. He was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team as a senior and was selected to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll four times. Eilert was honored at K-State with the Keith Amerson Academic Award in 2004. While at Cloud County, he earned KJCAA Academic All- America honors as a sophomore. Eilert came to West Virginia in 2007 and helped the Mountaineers earn 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2010 Final Four and five NCAA Sweet 16s. “Josh Eilert is the right person to lead our men’s basketball program next season,” Baker added. “He has been an important part of our success, and he has displayed great integrity, work ethic, and dedication. He has earned this opportunity to coach our team on an interim basis for the 2023-2024 season.” (Osborne County Farmer)

USGA Selects Newton Golf Course To Host 2024 U.S. Adaptive Open

NEWTON—A golf course in Newton won the bid to host a prestigious United States Golf Association event next summer. Sand Creek Station will be the host site for the U.S.Adaptive Open Championship next July. The 54-hole, stroke-play tournament will be the third iteration of the championship event when it comes to Kansas and will feature the world’s best golfers with disabilities. This will be the second USGA Championship hosted at Stand Creek Station. The Newton public course opened in 2006 and previously hosted the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Suspect In Deadly NW Kansas Shooting Remains Jailed on $200K Bond

HAYS—Bond was set for the man charged in the shooting death of a man outside of a Hays bar. Forty-year-old Keith A. Ostrom of Hays was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 63-year-old Larry D. Braun, Ellis County resident. Ostrom’s bond was set at $200,000.00, and as of Wednesday, June 28th, he remained in custody at the Ellis County Detention Center. No further court dates have been announced. (Hays Post)

Kangaroo Found Running Loose On Kansas Highway

WYANDOTTE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities have located the owner of a young kangaroo that was injured on a KC-area highway. Edwardsville Officers, Animal Control Officers and Bonner Springs Police worked together to capture an injured kangaroo on Interstate 435, according to a social medial report from Edwardsville Police. The kangaroo received veterinary care to determine the extent of its injuries. (Hays Post)
