SALINA — Police arrested a Salina teen last Wednesday after a bomb threat allegedly was made at a local high school. A staff member reported to the school resource officer that a 16-year-old boy had made a verbal threat concerning a bomb in the school to a group of people at Salina South High School on Wednesday, according to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus.

NICODEMUS — The “Ellis to Nicodemus: The Last Trek of the Journey to Nicodemus” documentary film was shot on locations on the actual trail, and at the Mound south of Damar. Property owners Leroy Walz and cousin, Al Longstaff collaborated with long-time friend and historian, Angela Bates of Nicodemus, to film footage of their farmsteads.Also Brian Simeau gave permission to use his property to film a scene where settlers for the first time viewed Nicodemus in the distance.

OBERLIN — Though most of us never anticipate living to be 100, Ivis Hanson, a retired Kanona-area farmer, reached a “plus one” milestone recently as he turned 101. Hanson had enjoyed living at Wheat Ridge Terrace Senior Apartments in Oberlin and drove himself most weekdays to the Golden Age Center to play pinochle with friends.

7-year-old dies, days after crash killed his father

WAMEGO — The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed that 7-year-old Korbin Tinkel died Saturday, Aug. 13, just days after the crash that killed his father. Randy L. Tinkel, 37, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, when his 2013 Ford F250 was hit from the rear while trying to make a left turn on Highway 24 less than a mile west of Airport Road. A 2-year-old and 7-year-old boy, Korbin Tinkel, were both passengers in Tinkel’s truck.

Sheriff IDs teen who died after vehicle lands in creek

ANDOVER — An Andover teenager died in an accident just after midnight Friday, Aug. 5, in Butler County. Emergency crews responded to the report of a vehicle crash southeast of Augusta, according to Undersheriff Daimon Cundiff. The vehicle left the roadway and entered Four-Mile Creek. After the crash, the 17-year-old male driver from Andover was able to exit the vehicle.

K9 ‘Ruby’ retires after 8 years with Kansas Game Wardens TOPEKA — A K9 with the Kansas Wildlife & Parks Game Wardens officially retired in May of 2022 after 8 years of dedicated service. According to the Game Warden’s Facebook post about the K9’s retirement, Ruby became well-known and has many stories attached to her name.
