SPOTLIGHTING THE

YEAR…1964

* And So They Say: Spec Dillingham: “I’ve already started my flower garden—in the basement.” Leonard Liebenau: “I’m enjoying the nice weather, but I wish someone would come up with a suggestion for getting some moisture.” Elmer Slansky: “I don’t think I’m going to take out after that Rooks County bear. If I leave him alone, he’ll leave me alone.”

* “Once upon a time there were three bears”— that’s how the story goes, but in Rooks County the story was a little different. As far as anyone knew there was only one bear. That a bear had been roaming at large in the area could not be denied as it had been seen at least on two different occasions. The last incident was reported by Mrs. Don Yoxall who had just left the highway about a mile and a half west of Stockton to turn into the driveway of their home. Her headlights picked up something standing a little further up the road, but close enough to be seen clearly by Mrs. Yoxall and the children. It was as tall as a small man, but definitely an animal with all the characteristics of a bear standing on its hind legs. And, Lyle Folsom had seen a bear quite plainly in broad daylight southwest of Stockton during the summer with many farmers reporting finding paw prints.

* Kansas Airways, Inc. of Colby was to begin scheduled airline service on February 3rd from Colby with intermediate stops at Stockton and Clay Center with the final destination being Topeka.

* The Rooks County Commissioners were hopeful that they had operators for the Rooks County Home for the Aged in Mr. and Mrs. John Willis of Denver, Colorado.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: The third liquor store had been opened in Stockton with Marion Larson as the proprietor. The crazy basketball game that was played for the benefit of the March of Dimes had netted $128.00, and was a lot of fun besides.

* Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hrabe were the parents of a son, Dean Frank, born on January 26th. Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Doughty were the parents of a daughter, Kenya Kay, born on January 28th.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: They say money talks, but few of us are well enough acquainted with it to carry on much of a conversation.

*Mrs. Joanna Stewart had returned from a two-week trip to New York City and Florida. In New York she attended a school in instruction put on by the Bernard Ultiman Yarn Company. Joanna also saw a number of Broadway plays in spite of the big snowstorm that had been raging there at the time. In Florida she spent time with friends in Fort Lauderdale, seeing many places of interest with Joanna’s biggest thrill getting to go deep sea fishing.

* Stockton was well represented at the LaCrosse Women’s Invitational Bowling Tournament with Iva Lee McMillen, Virginia Saunders, Marjorie Jarrett, Ileta Baxter of Stockton, and Dixie Mock of Plainville placing second.

* Mr. and Mrs. Charles Groner had announced the engagement of Lana Stephen to Mr. Larry Odle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Odle of Stockton.

* Lillian Lee Thomas had passed away.

* On sale at Webster’s Supermarket were twelve cans of Bestyet beans for $1.00, a dozen Bestyet donuts for 25¢, a quart jar of pickles for 29¢ and VO5 hairspray for $1.77.

* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies, “Dr. No” starring Sean Connery and Ursula Andress, and “A Ticklish Affair” starring Shirley Jones, Gig Young, Red Buttons and Carolyn Jones.
