NO BUENO. It was just before midnight on November 26, 1983. Flight 011, a Boeing 747, was making its approach to Madrid Barajas International Airport, Spain. About 10 minutes from landing, the warning system went off saying, 'Pull up! Pull up!' The official investigative report says, 'At the same time that the G.P.W.S. warnings are taking place, ten seconds before impact, the Commander says: 'Bueno. Bueno.' in a calm tone and without taking any corrective action. Five seconds later and also five seconds before impact, the Commander comments again: 'Bueno', and at the same time disengages the autopilot.' What's interesting is the pilot had 32 years of experience. He had gone through the same motions flight after flight for 32 years. He knew flying. And he knew the Boeing 747. Or so he thought. Despite the warning system 'screaming' at him, 'Pull up!', he knew better. In other words, he knew better than both the warning system and the autopilot. He basically told them to 'Shut up!' Sadly, the pilot flew his plane into a hill killing 181 of 192 people onboard that flight. The truth is that God built into us an autopilot to warn of spiritual danger. It's called our conscience. For example, we inherently hear the warning when we choose to lie. Our warning system tells us, 'Pull up!' or, in this case, 'Don't lie!' but too often we calmly shut off the autopilot. Each time our spiritual warning system 'screams' at us, God is warning that we're heading into the side of a 'hill.' Our conscience is 'screaming' at us, 'No Bueno! No Bueno!' We're being told, 'Danger! Danger! Danger!' God is saying we desperately need the Real Autopilot, the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone can see us safely to His landing strip (heaven). Rather than shutting off the Autopilot, we must admit, 'No Bueno!' I'm not ok. We must savingly trust Jesus and let Him take control! Have you taken corrective action? The only other option is to crash and burn.
