CHASING LIFE. This seems this describes multitudes of people today. In fact, it seems to be the norm. People are chasing after acceptance, joy, forgiveness, riches, happiness, peace, and the list goes on. Many “TV preachers” whotendtoemphasize God wants everyone to be healthy and wealthy, often abuse John 10:10. In this wonderful chapter, Jesus makes some two impactful statements about Himself. He declares, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved” (10:9). He also states, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep” (10:11). But in John 10:10, the Lord Jesus puts forth one of the reasons that He came to earth from heaven, saying, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Jesus desires that His sheep have the ability to live this life to the fullest. From a Bible standpoint, what does that look like? IOW, what is an abundant life? We find some help in John 5:24, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” Jesus indicates here that the genuine “sheep” or Christian has already, at some point in the past, passed from death to life. It appears that His use of the word “death” means what most people mean by “life.” That is, those who are chasing for meaning in life by all that they’re chasing after are actually chasing after death.
