Camping with the grands

We went on a very long trip last week in our new-to-us 5th-wheel camper. We had made prior reservations at the campground, which is a must in order to ensure a great spot. But before we packed up to leave on the camping trip, my husband made a long trip of his own: first to Cheney, to watch our will-be-freshman granddaughter play softball on Thursday night. Her team won its first game of the summer season, and consequently, Grandpa was invited to stay the rest of the summer if he brought that kind of luck. Early the next morning Bob continued south, all the way to Flint, Texas, where he watched our youngest granddaughter, who will be in third grade, participate in a weekend coach-pitch, end-of-season tournament of traveling teams. The team Karsyn played for totally dominated the tournament, going undefeated for the weekend and capturing the championship, complete with a Championship Ring that could probably fit my big toe. But then, I’ve only seen pictures of the ring because I was not there. (sniff-sniff)

Why did I not go on this trip? you ask. Well, let me tell you, that was a very difficult decision for me to make. But this trip took place the first few days of the month of June, and I simply could not get away from my job. Why am I not retired? you ask. Believe me, I have wondered that many times myself; especially while Bob was gone. But he did return on Monday, and when he did, he brought the two youngest grands from Texas with him, and then we packed up and made the very long drive: all the way to the far western front of Stockton to the Stockton City Park. It is beautiful there—if you haven’t visited the place recently, you should make an effort to go!

We had a blast, camping there most of the week. The kids love the playground and also went to the pool every day (except their last day with us when they both fell asleep after lunch and didn’t wake up until suppertime!). We had Charley with us, our two-year-old dogchild, and we went on long walks as she followed her nose all over the park, almost too interested in all the smells to deposit any smells of her own. We took a lot of our favorite games along and enjoyed playing together every night. We also enjoyed great breakfasts (always better when camping out!), and twice we made a fire to make s’mores, late at night.

But then, as in everything, all good things must come to an end, and their mom and dad wanted them back. They had come to move oldest grandson Caleb back to Hays where he plans to attend FHSU in the fall. So with room in their vehicle once again for the youngest two, they came and claimed them and returned home on Sunday, leaving Grandpa and Memaw to start planning our next camping adventure, perhaps farther away than Stockton City Park. Although, this was our second camping adventure to city park in three weeks, so it has kind of become a favorite place! But we think now we’ve got the hang of it and would like to travel a little further, perhaps even as far west as Webster Lake!

So... stay tuned for more camping adventures. And maybe, just maybe... we will start exploring the U.S.A. again, since our tour of all the Stocktons in North America a couple years ago was so much fun!
