On 14 Years Ago

Ellis native, Lynn Fisher, MD had joined the Rooks County Health Center and was seeing patients in Plainville, Stockton and Palco.

Rich Bouchey found a trophy all deer hunters dream of, but few realize, without firing a shot. On December 19, 2005, while hunting quail and pheasants, his friend’s dog, Jazz, found the carcass of a whitetail buck that had a massive set of horns. Knowing it was very unusual, he and his friend went about removing the head. In the days and weeks following, Bouchey took great care to follow legal procedures before he could officially lay claim to the unusual antlers that had 33 points and a green score of 246 1/8 Non-Typical Whitetail Deer.

For the first time in over a century there would not be a Smith in business in Stockton since Smith’s, the last retail establishment owned by the family, closed in December. The initial Smith family business was a hardware store founded by J. T. Smith in 1890. The business took the Smith name in 1901 when the furniture and funeral business were added. J. T. Smith was the grandfather of John Smith, the late husband of Smith’s current owner, Roma Smith. By the time John, who passed away in 1996, inherited the business, it also sold appliances and floor coverings.

Three Stockton teens were injured Dec. 27, 2005, in a one-vehicle accident 3.5 miles south and one mile east of Stockton at 18 Terrace and N Road. Ashley May Kuhlmann, 16, was westbound on County Road N as she approached the T intersection at 18 Terrace. The vehicle was unable to stop at the stop sign, and slid through the intersection, striking the ditch on the west side of 18 Terrace. Kuhlmann and passengers Chris Schleicher, 16, and Amanda Small, 15, were injured and taken to Rooks County Health Center. Schleicher was flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Passenger Blake Wilcox, 17, of Smith Center, was uninjured.

The KAY Snoball Royalty included Grant Kollman, Cody Dix, Lizzy Moll, Savannah Lowry, Levi Earl, Alaina Dix, Heath Muir and Rachel Moll. The event was to take place January 7, 2006.

A Plainville woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident just east of Burdett on Kansas Highway

156. The driver of the vehicle, John Eisiminger, 63, of Plainville fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle left the roadway, vaulted off of a culvert and collided with the other side of the culvert before landing upside down. Passenger Carole Kay Eisiminger, 63, was killed in the accident.

Stockton EMTs responded to a call on Dec. 27th to a home in Stockton where 10-year-old Devilon Thompson had jumped from the second-story roof onto the ground. He was taken to Rooks County Health Center, and then transferred by Eagle Med to a Wichita hospital.

Obituaries were published for: Hope Stewart Denton (1918-2005); Carole Kay Eisiminger (1942-2005); Robert John “Bob” Roy (1946-2005); Samuel Blatchford (1924-2005); and Herman T. Eilers (1933-2006).

Showing at the Nova Theatre was “Walk The Line,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as the man in black and Reese Witherspoon as the often married, heart-of-gold June Carter.

Looking Back 14 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year...1992 — Plainville physician Dr. A. M. Pederson ended his 38-year career with his retirement. T. J. Slansky, an offensive lineman for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, was set to play in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day against the Miami Hurricanes.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1950 — The New Year’s Baby, Marilyn Jean, was born at the Harwood Nursing Home on January 1 to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Schindler. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Simoneau of Damar announced the birth of a daughter born on January 3 at the Harwood Nursing Home. Mr. and Mrs. Buck Stephen were the parents of a son, born on January 3 at the Harwood Nursing Home. And Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Schilowsky of Woodston were the parents of a daughter, Doris Fay, born December 31 at the Harwood Nursing Home.

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1908

The ladies of the club dance crowd arranged and carried out a very successful leap year ball New Year’s Eve. Partners for the ball were obtained by placing each gentleman’s name in a sealed envelope and each lady drawing. The dance hall was decorated with holly and mistletoe. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Cooper and Mr. Rhodes, with Henry Smith and Belle Higgins relieving them at times.
