* And So They Say: Viola Paulson: “As we were coming home from Phillipsburg last Tuesday night, we counted 87 cars going north out of Stockton from the Fair.” Stranger in the grandstand: “I always heard this was a good fair, but I didn’t have any idea it was this good.” Kenneth Medley: “Sunday was the first time I ever sat through three ball games—and the last.” Bump Arrington: ‘I think the City should pass an ordinance making the people cut their weeds.”

* Mr. and Mrs. Edward Brummer were the parents of a daughter, Jennifer Maxine, born on August 16th. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hrabe of Smith Center were the parents of a son, Christopher Todd.

* Three break-ins had occurred at Palco and one at Damar over the weekend. All four entrances were made by prying doors open. At Palco the breakins were at the Clark’s Standard Station, Clark’s Café and the Home Oil Company. At Damar the break-in was at the Damar Grain Company.

* The announcement had been made of the sale of Wright Hardware to Reid Baxter and his son, Blaine. The Baxters named their new business Baxter Hardware and Electric.

* A two car crash four miles north and two miles west of Stockton claimed the lives of a Stockton woman and a married couple from Iowa. Apparently neither driver saw the other car as they approached the intersection. Mr. and Mrs. Todd, who had spent the night at their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Hunter, had been thrown from their car. Mr. Todd was pronounced dead when help reached the scene. Mrs. Todd died at the Plainville Hospital. Donald McLaughin had been taken to Hays with undetermined injuries, while his young wife, Mary Ann died enroute to the hospital.

* Rolland Freed had arrived in Stockton from Dallas, Texas to take over the management of the local Stephenson Store. Rolland, his wife Ann and their eight-month-olddaughter Michelle were temporarily living at the Owl Court, but had plans to move into the Vernie Degenhardt home. * From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: There is one thing for sure…..the ten-year-old horses seen at the Fair looked a lot better than the ten-year-old cars.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Spencer had purchased the French Cabins east of Stockton from Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth French. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Muir were the parents of a son born August 24th. Webster’s Peter Pan Food Store was advertising green peppers at 18¢ a pound.

* Six-year-old Kelly, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Stewart, had had the misfortune to receive a slight concussion and some painful cuts and bruises when he had fallen off his bicycle.

* On sale at Slansky IGA were large baking hens at 39¢ a pound, two pounds of seedless grapes for 29¢, five TV pot pies for $1.00, and three pounds of Butternut coffee for $2.59.

* Showing at the Park Drive-In were the movies, “Sergeants 3” starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, and “Shane” starring Alan Ladd and Jean Arthur.
