* And So They Say: Pudy Larson: “The grandkids are gone and we now have a new project at our house—painting the inside.” Lula Keeten: “It looked kind of good to see girls in dresses again the first day of school.” Doris McMichael: “It looks like the school kids are going to be dragging Main with Hondas this year instead of cars.” Clarence Heiner: “After you have already had your shoulder broken twice, the third time doesn’t hurt much.” Albert McCue: “One of the leading citizens said he saw two little green men peaking out of the UFO sighted here Friday evening.”

* Mr. and Mrs. Gary Wanamaker of Kansas City were the parents of a son born on August 27th. Mr. and Mrs. Kent Townley were the proud parents of a daughter, Sandra Ranae, born on August 25th. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pomeroy were the parents of a son, Michael Duane, born on August 27th.

* Mr. and Mrs. J. L. (Dode) Morrissey and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Mitchum and children had returned from a twoweek vacation trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, Tia Juana, Mexico and Placerville, California. They visited a number of the big dams, scenic places of interest and things worth seeing in the larger cities. They all thoroughly enjoyed the trip. They also visited in the home of their son and brother, Douglas Morrissey.

* Connie Spencer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Spencer, had completed the one-year course in practical nursing at Dodge City Community College. All of the young ladies in the class were honored at the college by a tea. The members will write their state licensure examination, given by the State Board of Nursing in Topeka in October.

* Kathy Look, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Look, had been taken to the Hadley Hospital in Hays as a result of a injury to her left hand. She was trying to pull two glasses apart while washing dishes and received a deep cut between her thumb and forefinger, severing the tendons and artery. Considerable repair work was necessary and it was to be some time before she would be able to use her hand again.

* Kenneth Brull, shop foreman for Jones Motor & Implement Company, had taken a three-week training course in the operation of the new radiator repair shop equipment, which had been recently installed at Jones Motor. The training consisted of radiator repair and cleaning, operation of the flow test machine for testing radiators on and off the car, and also in installing new cores in the radiators.

* Citizens of the area saw an Unidentified Flying Object hovering slightly northeast of Stockton at an altitude of several thousand feet. The setting sun reflected on it and made it appear to be brightly lighted, but the luminous effect faded when it became darker. Most of the citizens had realized it was probably a balloon used in some sort of atmosphere research, with the object seen again over the weekend traveling slowly southwest.

* A total of 219 head of 4-H livestock had been sold the last day of fair to various business and individuals of Rooks and the surrounding counties for a grand total of $29,882.04.

* As We Think It: If we could have eliminated July, this would have been a pretty nice summer.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: Weather is what you have at home…climate is what you go away to enjoy.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: The marriage of Rita Schindler and Eugene Hrabe had occurred on August 17th. One rural school, District 14, had failed to open for lack of a teacher. The Farmers Store was advertising eating apples at 12 cents per pound.

* A man traveling alone in a camper had stopped for a while in Stockton and made the remark that he had just visited Nicodemus which he thought was one of the most interesting places he had ever visited. He had spent considerable time there, visiting with the residents, one of whom was a man well past 90, who had come to Nicodemus with the original colony. The visitor is retired and was spending his time just traveling around, visiting out-ofthe- way places of interest and buying or trading for unusual antiques. He had with him in the truck what he thought to be the oldest washing machine in the United States.

* An April wedding was being planned for Linda R. Burgess of Chase and Walter P. Eades of Stockton.

* Anita Kay Miller and Francis Edward Shaw were united in marriage on July 16th. The bride was given in marriage by her father and wore a gown of Pearl de sole.

* On sale at Slansky’s IGA were fresh frying chickens for 33¢ a pound, Post cereals including Alpha Bits, Sugar Crisp and Grapenuts were being sold for 3 packages for $1.00, bananas for 10¢ a pound, and five cans of Libby’s golden corn for $1.00.

* Terry Eggers with Star 4-H had shown the Grand Champion Fat Lamb at the Rooks County Free Fair with Terry Carsten, also of Star 4-H, receiving Reserve Grand Champion.

* Mr. and Mrs. Paul Marshall had held a slumber party in honor of the 12th birth anniversary of their daughter, Sara Jo. The girls present were Katy Laska, Connie Poore, Becky Korb, Elizabeth Zoller and Cindy Hulse.

* Showing at the Park Drive-In were the movies, “The Rounders” starring Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda, and “Made In Paris” starring Ann Margaret, Louis Jourdan and Richard Crenna.

* Chuck Lambert with Palco 4-H had received the grand champion ribbon for his steer with Steve Dix of Star 4-H winning reserve grand champion at the Rooks County Free Fair.

* Amy May Odle, James Edward Cooper, George Nelson Bush, W.W. “Wally” Steeples, Bertha Mc Connell, Claude Gilmore and Arthur H. Sanders passed away.
