* The Topeka Daily Capital had named Robert Becker, football coach of the Stockton High School Tigers, “Coach of the Week.”

* City manager C. N. Harper had reported that gasoline, both 80 and 100 octane, was available at the municipal airport. A telephone had also been installed. The three hangars in the process of completion were owned by M. N. Boethin, Jack Berkley, and Mosher and Nelson of Plainville.

* A dinner had been held to honor McDill (Huck) Boyd, the newly -ppointed Republican National Committeeman from Kansas at the VFW Hall in Phillipsburg. Congressman Bob Dole was to be the featured speaker.

* Life-long resident of Rooks County, Harley C. Miller, had died at the Hadley Hospital in Hays where he had been a patient for over five days. He was 76 years of age and had spent a good many years northwest of Stockton on the place on which he was born. He was the custodian at Stockton High School and served his country in World War I.

* Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith were the parents of a son, Ronald Craig, born on October 10th.

* It had been a close call from asphyxiation for Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Harmon, who lived on South First Street. Mr. Harmon had heard Mrs. Harmon fall to the floor, and being blind could not use the phone to call for help, so he made his way to the next door neighbor’s. It was found that it was gas fumes, which had caused Mrs. Harmon to lose consciousness, and it was several hours before she had recovered. The trouble was caused by a squirrel, which had worked its way into the chimney leading to the wall heater. The Harmons were cared for by friends and neighbors until their home was habitable again. * Stockton FFA members who had attended the National FFA Convention in Kansas City were Rodney Carsten, Dennis Doty, Ronnie Eades, Estelle Green, Ronnie Jackson, Tony McReynolds, Ted Odle and Philip Probasco. The group was present at the banquet to see Donald McLaughlin, and seven other boys from Kansas receive the American Farmer Degree.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: It appeared that H. N. Rodgers and Son of Memphis, Tenn., had been low bidder for the foundation work at Webster Dam, with a bid of $993,870.00. A contract had been let for the construction of the new drive-in theatre. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bartlett were planning to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. The Band Mothers Club had been organized with Mrs. Kenneth Pauley as president.

* Mrs. Virginia Saunders had entertained a few friends of her son, Bobby, in honor of his birth anniversary. The boys had enjoyed a hamburger supper and the football game at Plainville. Guests were Jerry Harding, Johnnie Hageman, Bruce Doty, Alvy Bobbitt and Don Jenkins.

* Mrs. Ferrell Stoutimore, Mrs. Jim Riffel and Mrs. Forrest Look had entertained at a dance at City Hall in honor of the birth anniversaries of their sons, Scott Stoutimore, Kit Goddard and Chuck Look. The eighth grade class enjoyed the dance very much as well as the cookies and pop which were served as refreshments.

* At the St. Thomas Altar Society meeting, Clark Stocking gave an interesting and informative talk on the proposed junior college for Stockton. A $5.00 donation was voted on to give to the United Fund with plans for the annual Bazaar to be held in November. Lue Slansky won the mystery gift. Hostesses were Leona Kriley and Jo Bennett.

* On sale at Webster’s Supermarket were Wilson hams for 57¢ a pound, Booth frozen fish sticks for 27¢ a six-ounce package, six Bestyet loaves of bread for $1.00, four cans of Del Monte tuna for $1.00, and Carnation instant breakfast packages for 58¢.

* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies, “This Property is Condemned” starring Natalie Wood, and “The Trouble with Angels,” starring Rosalind Russell.
